They have many characteristics of being alive.

I would like to say that if you argued with a patient over whether or not virus' are alive is kind of immature.

The important thing is that the patient should be helped. Not argued with to the point where they hang up the phone.

Another thing is.

Just because scientifically they are not recognized as being alive. Doesn't mean they are not.

Science has changed many many many times throughout history. Just because something is assumed to be scientifically proven today. Does not mean the mechanism to change that hypothesis cannot be found tomorrow.

They very well could be considered to be alive once a mechanism is found to prove this..

Maybe our knowledge is not advanced enough yet to realize this...
