Bella- In the first year I both gained and lost weight. Not more than 6 or 7 lbs. I don't gain weight unless I overdo carbs and then it can go on very easily.
I work with the lab and just added the kelp on my own. Read up on kelp if you get a chance. It is very nutritious and will very gently support the thyroid. This seems to be a safe way to get some Iodine into the diet.
