Normal.

I read a couple of articles online today that really..."annoyed"me? Annoyed, in quotes, because that's not the right term to express my feelings. Infuriated me? saddened me? That's a little closer.

The first was an article on Brooke Burke, we've discussed her here before. It appears that she'll have her thyroid removed today, or has already had it removed, to be followed by a nice dose of radioactive Iodine to kill any remaining thyroid tissue. She feels brave and strong, according to the article. The doctors have informed her that thyroid cancer, is a cancer "with a happy ending".

She thanked everyone on FB that sent her well wishes and stories of their experiences with thyroid cancer and ablation of the thyroid gland. She did not mention that at least on FB member(yours truly) had sent her a very informative Dr. Dach article on how thyroid cancer is being overdiagnosed and overtreated these days. For any of you that may have missed it, it's in this thread. Pay attention, this could save YOUR thyroid one day:

Now, we don't know what sort of cancer she has been diagnosed with, she has not chosen to share that information. It's a supposition on our parts that a "wait and see" stance would be the best course of action in her particular case.

We KNOW. though, that many cancers are overdiagnosed and overtreated, Breast, prostate, thyroid, to name a few.

People get scared when they hear the "C" word. And doctors are OBLIGATED to overtreat. It's overtreat, or end up in court. Doctors overdiagnose because then they can "cure" the patient:

~The second article I read was on young people with cancer. twenties and thirties:

It's part of a series that Huffington Post is doing on.... yep, young people with cancer. Apparently EVERY EIGHT MINUTES a young person is diagnosed with cancer in the United States. More on that here:

And there's a website geared towards this group, with forums, links to blogs, links to services, etc:

Part of me thinks that it's wonderful that we have support groups for young people with cancer and that we have media stars bravely facing their cancers.

This is WRONG. It's a pretty twisted world when this is NORMAL. This has happened within MY lifetime. I am 53 years old. When I was a child, people were not being diagnosed with cancer left and right. When I was "young" people were not being diagnosed. Oh, sure, the occasional "old" person, but my contemporaries? NO WAY! So, now, young people are coming into this world thinking that this is NORMAL!!!!! What a stinkin' rotten legacy. It just makes me sad.

I'll leave it at that for now. To be continued.
