Longterm is exactly right. Vaseline acts as a barrier that prevents water from getting to the surface of your lips. That is why they use it on babies to prevent diaper rash.... it keeps the wetness from getting to the baby's delicate skin.

Un-Petroleum Jelly will do the exact same thing, only with natural ingredients.
