Adrenal Fatigue, Sodium (salt) potassium ratio, and Licorice

The sodium (salt) - potassium ratio affects the amount of water in the body.

People with too much potassium, pass out more water in the urine, which reduces the amount of water in the body.

People with too much sodium, pass out less water in the urine, which increases the amount or water in the body.

You may have heard it said, that people with high blood pressure should avoid salt.


The sodium - potassium ratio can be affected by consuming salt or potassium supplements. However, it is primarily regulated by the adrenal glands.

The herb Licorice, also spelt Liquorice, has been used for thousands of years to promote the health of the adrenal glands (and other things). It was so widely used up until a hundred years ago, that they made a candy like the herbal medicine.

Licorice is an effective treatment for adrenal fatigue.

If people with adrenal fatigue take Licorice, they should feel a noticable increase in energy after taking it.

If people take too much Licorice, it may result in excess sodium in the body, and fluid retention, which is resolved when you stop taking the Licorice. So you will know when you have had enough.

It is ideal to use the 1:1 liquid extract. Most herbs can be taken as infusions (herbal teas), but licorice comes from a hard root, and those trying to extract it at home may not be very successful.

There are drugs prescribed to supply hormones similar to those produced by the adrenal glands (for example some asthma drugs). As the body is trying to maintain the correct level of these hormones, this results in the adrenal glands producing less, which makes the situation worse. If Licorice is used, and not these drugs, this results in the body correcting the situation itself.
