I've used Paypal for YEARS with complete success and never any problems.
I've also work for a bank.

The fact that it has gone through your checking account is a PLUS. So, it works.
The email instructions will mention ALL the details AND in the ORDER in which to do them.
If you cannot find the email, check your spam or bulk folders in your email.
The instructions will say something about going back to your Paypal page and finish the process to become "verified". That step MUST be done or it won't work.
I remember going through the same frustration you had until I re-read the email, and then located the next NECESSARY step in order to COMPLETE the process.
Once you do that, I believe it takes a day or two, and your 'status' should be changed to 'verified' on the Paypal page.
Make sure also that the information you have provided for your NAME, ADDRESS, AND PHONE NUMBER are the same as where you card is mailed to you; or bank statement, etc. If they don't match, it will not work.
Make sure you have included the three digit CVN number from the back of the card.

I have NEVER had any problems with PayPal, and it is now the ONLY way I will pay for anything.
