I had a possible diagnosis of stronyloides after a positive Elisa test from Hospital of tropical diseases in london back in May. Received minimal treatment, one dose of Invermectin as they did not find lavae in stool sample, and I think it only becomes positive if they find an actual nematode!
When I went there, I had been on strong herbals for 4 months so i am not surprised nothing was found in stools.
Since then I have been referred to a Respiratory specialist because of a 5 yr long cough. He was asked to bear in mind when he treated me that I could have strongyloides and this might be the cause of the cough.
well he has had MRI scans of my lungs etc and confirmed that cancer and cavities are not present, and also the mould allergy that he suspected was not the route cause. He could see evidence of an on going bronchial infection.
He looked me up and down when I first visited and announced I did not have strongyloides [quote -I would be dead by now if i did!] so he is determined to treat me with Steroids although I have told him, they worsen my symptoms and will only encourage the spread of stongyloides if indeed I do have them.
unwillingly I agreed to resume my steroid inhaler at small amounts- 80 mgs twice aday, then after a month increasing to 160 mg twice daily. Sure enough I started to get my warning symptoms of pains in feet, cramps, joint pains, headaches etc so reduced the quantity back to 80 mg.
The other issue I have which I do not think is normal is my mouth. I started with an infection in the bone near a root canal four months ago. i had 2 courses of anitbiotics which had zero effect. a month ago it produced a surface abcess high up on the gum. I do not have tooth ache as such but a very tender bone/gum that has been producing puss for a month now. I have had three courses of anitbiotics from my dentist. Doubling up with flagyl at the same time. it has not made any impression on the absess - that is still bursts once a day and releases puss. it strikes me that this is NOT normal and is potentially down to the srongyloides....as is my lungs. does anybody know if an absess that continues for this length of time is common place???
With regards to my gut...that is not bad. I believe that my continued use of herbs and Antibiotics keeps my stools pretty normal and formed. however if I stop the herbs / Antibiotics I quickly resume the 35% diarrhoea basis of my bowels within 7 days.
I am vastly better than I was a year ago, but I am concerned that my rather precarious state of my lungs, teeth and gut indicate that I stil probably have a problem.
meanwhile my doc and respiratory specialist are sending me back to the Hospital of Trop diseases to have " some sense talked into me" as they think I need to drop this strongyloides thing and swallow their medicine!!!
Please may I have your opinion as to whether I am a hypochondriac or whether you might think you still have strongyloides in my position?
