A true historical perspective
I agree wholeheartedly that we should endeavor to reduce our environmental footprint, though I am far more concerned with the toxins we are releasing into the environment and our destruction of the environment than I am the issue of man's contribution to global warming.
When you look at the recent past, there is certainly a trend of warming:
However when you talk about "thousands of years" and look back, you will see that the rise in sea level in recent times is nothing compared to what it was over the past several thousand years prior.
And if you look back at the history of our planet over millions of years you will find that over most of geologic history, long-term average sea level has been significantly higher than today.
The bottom line to me is that, while we are destructive of our environment and should take measures to correct that, there are far bigger and badder forces at work when it comes to warming and sea level rise than man's actions.
