Epsom Salts

I read somewhere that magnesium sulphate is best absorbed via the skin (baths) I was wondering what it is exactly that the ES does when swallowed, apart from move the bowels. There seems to be some debate over whether it relaxes and dilates the ducts... Hulda doesn't seem to say in her book. Is it down to the magnesium.. in which case why don't we bathe in it.. or is the action of it when swallowed more directly on the bowel contents rather than at the cellular level.
Thanks for any help.
