Is it obligatory to have 2 resistors like the scheme of Johhny Apple Bomb?

My generator is with 12 ga, 5" submerged wires.
I have one resistor 33k ohms but I will change my silver wires with silver strips? So I also have to change the resistor...

If I have two strips 4 millimeters wide and 2 millimeters thick and they are 4" in the water? What should be the parameters of resistor for maximum effectiveness?

Guys I can't understand all because I'm not familiar with electrical part of the physics and these inches get me confused.
