I've wondered this myself. I've heard that sunlight causes cold sore outbreaks, but have never heard what it is about the sunlight that causes an outbreak. I imagined it was from the vitamin D and from what you've said here, it confirms that (at least in my mind). I've also read that high levels of vit D can trigger fibromylgia flare-ups, which causes your entire body, even your skin to hurt. You might want to get checked for that if you are having this reaction to D. I've read that fibro is caused by persistent, low-grade infection, possibly viral. Could even be related to the herpes virus. I always get a cold sore on the inside of my nose on the tail of a painful fibro flare-up and i think the two are tied together.
I imagine folks are careful to blame vitamin D for any health problems, as deficiency can cause more serious health problems than cold sores.
