powders vs. tinctures
Hv, I know you recommend powders over tinctures. However Herb Cafe makes a strong case the other way around. Can you shed light on why powders are better in light of their claim? Thx!
Slightly condensed text below taken from the Herb Cafe website:
Why tinctures are superior to other herbal preparations such as capsules, teas, infusions?
Many herbal/medicinal properties contained in the leaf, bark, nut, and root of herb are not water soluble, so the constituents are not fully released upon ingestion. Dried herbs, as in powders or capsules, can start to lose potency quickly and may not get assimilated upon digestion. The herbs in a tincture are significantly more potent than other formulations. The alcohol helps tinctures assimilate into the bloodstream much more efficiently than other methods. And as a final bonus, Alcohol allows your tincture to remain potent for years!
Why alcohol and not herbal tea or capsules?
For thousands of years, alcohol has been the professional herbalist’s top choice to fully release and preserve the effectiveness of herbs. Also, many herbal properties are not water soluble, so the constituents are not fully released in teas, and many can be destroyed by the hot water. Dried herbs, especially in capsules, start to lose potency quickly. Alcohol also helps tinctures assimilate into the bloodstream much faster than a capsule or tea. And as a final bonus, Alcohol allows your tincture to remain potent for years!
