I never drank coffee until my early/mid twenties in college (I was a late-starter) when introduced to italian lattes across the border in Windsor, at the time there were no coffee houses in Detroit that I knew of. I thought I was going to have a heart attack after drinking two. I had a fun ride with coffee for a couple of years before it started making me feel bad, and even then I couldn't give it up for a couple more years. The past 5 years I just do green tea or mate in the am and sometimes afternoon, but almost every time I have coffee I feel like crap. I guess it's not just the caffeine, because I'm certainly getting that from the green tea, there is something else in it that my liver doesn't like, at least it feels that way. I still love it, though. It's a rare treat when I'm up for the potential consequences. It's such a grown-up beverage, I always feel sort of sophisticated when drinking coffee, if that makes sense.
