I have 6 screws in my left ankle, the surgery was called an "open fixed reduction", ankle was broken in 3 places and dislocated. The screws are still in there- 22 years later. In an x-ray the screws look like a birds nest- all criss- crossed.
Obviously I was a lot younger and dumber when this happened..the surgeon told me that there was no point in removing the screws. They were only put in to hold the bones in place as they healed, they do not have any function.
I just wonder how traumatic it would be to get them removed. I envision the bone grown completely around them.
And my scars are totally faded now. Danged if I want to go under the knife again!
My ankle bothers me sometimes, usually when the weather's changing. And I don't have full range of movement. Close.
