This is why they swell in response to viral infections. When we have many active viral infections there is an increased production of white blood cells called B lymphocytes. So many are produced that they crowd up in the lymph nodes causing the lymph nodes to swell. The lymphatic system is the "dishwasher" for the body's cells and helps to remove excess fluids. And it composes a portion of the body's immune system.
