For what reason was it necessary to have the buildings collapse in their own footprint? Why not let it fall on adjacent bldgs creating even more damage, and deaths. The cost of demolition would have been higher to tear down the remaing structures than it would be to clean up a pile of debris on the ground. Wouldn't the same message be sent?

I agree. If you look at this from my perspective (I surmise there could have been possible collaboration with al Quaeda that al Quaeda didn't know about.) or your perspective, there must have been a motif to destroy the entire buildings.  Perhaps they wanted to completely destroy a particular business or an organization inside the towers.

Perhaps a mixture of the jet fuel with something else inside the towers compounded the heat which led to the collapse of both towers.
