Re: MMS non-activate

Hello Bret,

You almost have it correct...

The textbooks have changed. The current definition of oxidizer not only includes compounds that readily transfer oxygen, but also include substances that participate in redox reactions. In this case, chlorine dioxide readily gives up 5 electrons and is reduced in the process.

While this classifies it as an oxidizer, there is no oxygen given off in the process. In fact, it accepts oxygen in the final stages of its breakdown, so in the strictest sense, it uses oxygen.

[Edit] Oops, I think I got this wrong...

Let's see now, ClO2 goes to chlorite ClO2- and chlorate ClO3- This is where it picks up an extra oxygen, but then it continues to chloride Cl- so it actually gives back the oxygen. This oxygen bonds with hydrogen to form water. I am not sure this remaining oxygen has any potential at all... [EndEdit]

MMS is not oxygen therapy, but it is oxidation therapy.

Tom
