Words about depression and iodine supplementation.
Primarily for #102875 and PursuingHealing. I hadn't responded yet and the thread is toward the end of the page, so I'm just starting over up here! This is in reference to getting off anti-depressants and dealing with
Depression while
Iodine supping from:

This is going to be lengthy - but worth it!!
I went cold turkey off anti-depressants - and I am not suggesting anyone else does this. The meds were making me suicidal - so cold-turkey didn't seem that bad. I was 26 at the time. The best way to do it is to wean off, I suppose - but darn that sucks too.
If you're going to detox off anti-depressants - you HAVE to be supplying your body with what it needed, that was manifesting an imbalance, before you started the meds.
That means enough protein, enough iron & B vitamins (folate!), enough water and electrolytes.
Both your diets sound good (pursuinghealing - I'm so glad you were doing a bit better on the iron & folate - good stuff, right?!). I have questions, though. I know Pursuinghealing is a pretty petite girl, #102875 - are you petite too? I'll bet you are. Do you ingest things that are common food allergens?
Say no to food allergens right now. Don't ingest things that are blanketly known to contribute to
Depression and ingest the things that are known to help with depression.
If I were you, I'd stop eating common depression/food-allergens while doing this and see if that doesn't help you feel better. Don't ingest wheat, corn, soy, refined
Sugar or dairy. I KNOW 'pursuinghealing' eats wheat - and I'm tellin' you guys - I get depressed EVERY TIME I cheat and and eat wheat. Hands down - no lie. You don't have to be without these food elements forever but in order to create a decent experiment - take out the common triggers.
I think that 10 years of asthma medication really did a number on my system.
During that period - I was also on birth control. BOTH of which are halide donors. Two fold, I was screwed. I would cut out any carbs that aren't alkalizing and loaded with a complex amino acid profile. You can have millet, quinoa or brown rice (amaranth and buckwheat can be permissable too but some still react to the level of gluten in them) but basically - don't ingest empty carbs that don't donate anything to your rebuilding and healing ability.
More amino acids + more EFA's = regeneration for your neurochemistry. I've just learned that Omega 6 can be adverse to healing your thyroid, so don't rely on those just yet. Coconut oil is one of the safest EFA's and truly beneficial to
Iodine supplementation. It's good for your thyroid, good for your brain - and it's anti-parasitic. Coconut oil is high in caprylic acid which helps deal with candida. Candida proliferation is an off-shoot of years of asthma-meds and symptomatic of depression.
The answer? Stay away from stuff that helps create more candida. Time your binders and your flushers mindfully to keep you 1) getting the most out of
Iodine and 2) trigger your mind/body connection to know that you're helping yourself EVERY STEP OF THE WAY TOWARD HEALTH. This self-love connection is a bigger slice of the pie than most recognize. If you're suffering, if you're depressed and your mind/body sees yourself get up off the couch, go to the herb box, do your flushes and is preparing all your food with the 'I'm gonna get through this' vibration - that alone will help you get miles ahead on healing depression.
Ya gotta focus on those absorbers, binders and flushers. Vitamin C/Potassium Chloride and Salt flushes TOTALLY HELP. However, only flushing, also washes away your electrolyte stores. Use them intelligently. Keep a 1/4 tsp of Sole (Himalayan Salt Solution) in every
quart of water you drink with perhaps a smidge of potassium chloride as well and that gives you SLOW APPROPRIATION of electrolytes. BOTH are important. When you're having a hard couple of hours - flush till you feel better.
DETOX LESSON #1: DO NOT LET YOURSELF SUFFER. Suffering hurts your whole mind-body connection and we don't get points for that. We feel pitiful so we don't remember to reach for what'll help, but herein lies the Karmic homework. If you reach up for that which will help - the emotional action ALONE helps quell your fear that this 'will never end.'
Don't fool yourself, you're low in B vitamins. Almost everybody is. B vitamin, Magnesium deficiencies and dehydration are a HUGE piece of depression. Of course, Geritol is correct about the
parasite element. If you're laden with Ammonia (which if you have parasites, you ARE), say, from years of asthma meds, anti-biotics, wheat, etc - and you take ornithine and other amino acids/absorbers and you feel better - there's a huge answer as well. You're depressed because you still have
parasites which are eating your reparative elements (bile, B, Mag, salt, etc), leaving you with noxious chemicals that make you depressed and what does iodine do?
It knocks the bad guys lose and you feel it all ten fold! IMHO,
parasite cleansing is a huge key. About 30 days after being on iodine and finishing a quality
parasite cleanse - I felt at least 70% of my
Depression that had been lingering for years - magically disappear.
Good stuff, right? ONLY if you don't shoot blindly. I went through a couple months of not paying attention to the companion nutrients or flushes and just squirting iodine here and there. Slowly, I started to feel depressed again. I went back, calibrated the protocol, made a time sheet that is posted next to my herbs and voila - my neuro-chemistry started to level out again.
Another huge piece of this puzzle: If you're still hypo or hyper thyroid (both are possible while your thyroid finds balance, it's like layers of an onion, Rome wasn't built in a day, right?!?) then depression is still totally understandable. If your adrenals are still loaded with halides and you're detoxing them, tipping over into adrenal fatigue ALONE can make you feel depressed.
The whole mind/body/food balance must be calibrated - not just one area.
I know it all seems like a lot, right?
I've almost finished tweeking my new protocol for low sugar, iodine, soft-chelation. It's an excel spreadsheet with timing for absorbers/binders/flushers and appropriate cushions for when detox reactions and depression hit. If you'd like a copy, I'm happy to send you one. Drop me your e-mail and I'll send it to ya. (pursuinghealing, you're included in that of course).
OH! The B Vitamin. Food based B's are always best, of course. Check out this website and you can enter in any food you want and see the mineral/vitamin profile for foods you're eating:
http://www.nutritiondata.com
When replenishing your B stores, though, most synthetic based B's go STRAIGHT IN THE POTTY. There is one that is totally bio-identical and grown on probiotics so it's already pre-digested. It's expensive - but really, really worth it. A couple bottles (while behaving yourself otherwise) and a few months will get you miles from where you are now. Here's a good link to the stuff that saved my butt:

All my love to you and know that the truth always and forever will be:
You are EXACTLY where you need to be. :)
