Re: Astrology & Health

>Read 'em both and they are great books...I agree that Science and >spirituality are not mutually exclusive...although I do believe >that there comes a point where things cannot be explained...enter >the mysteries!

This was my point in the begining. Not all truths are provable. I couldnt' agree more. But it has been PROVEN that all truths are not provable(sans Godel). So we dont' have to guess about it. My objection to a lot of Astrology is the feel good anything goes b/c we like it attitude. I've heard that astrology can cure cancer and that natural medicines are better, slower working and have no side effects at all. That's just bunk. And I'm confused over peoples predilection to believe something simply b/c it appeals to them on some aesthetic level. I'm sure the lady who says natural medicines have no side effects very much wants to believe that. I'm confused she doesn't understand her wish to have it be true has nothing to do with physical/organic chemistry.
The mind is clearly able to go beyond the rational and the provable. That doesn't mean we get to be ridiculous about what we can't prove.

>Ahhh...wu wei...'doing nothing'....how right you are that it does >not mean 'inaction'...and often confused for such! But the Tao >also gives great caution about 'words' and that the conceptual >mind is not the True Mind...centered in the heart and arising >from spiritual energy. One of the many paradoxes...that the >Taoist cannon is emmense and that many Taoists were/are very >gifted scholars! No..the pursuit of knowledge is certainly not >useless! But studying about the True Mind...complete with psychic >abilities, etc....is not a substitue for experiencing it directly.

I couldn't agree more.

>Children don't lose their True Mind as a function of age...they >lose it as their energies become dispersed in the world of this >and that...the polarities. There are adults who maintain/regain >this perspective and raise their children in such a way that they >too, retain these abilities....although the numbers are probably >far less than you suggested...in part because of additional >influences of culture which do not support...but rather >discourage them. Locating folks with a foot firmly planted in >both worlds...science and spirit...is a rare treasure! I'm sure >their are closet mystics in the scientific ranks...but do they >dare come out of that closet and risk the ostracism of their >colleagues?! The scientific community is hardly objective and >open-minded about such things!

I'm not sure I agree. Wouldn't the scientifically inclinded be the perfect mystic able to anticipate whatever proof could be required and pre-emptively be prepared with that proof?
Any credible scientist is going to keep an open mind no matter how far out a position you take. Their first question is going to be about your evidence, however. There are many scientists that are just as dogmatic about their beliefs as any fundamentalist. We're not concerning ourselves with them. :)
Giordano Bruno had a monumental spirit and was burned at the stake as an excommunicate and heratic for publically postulating that the stars were objects like our own sun but very far away. So I tend to think that if there were people like this that *someone* would come forward. Scientists (especailly the mathematicians) can be a nervy lot. :)

>You say that you are acquainted with the 'notion' of the quiet >mind...why not experience it directly? Prove it for yourself! ; )

I have difficulty quieting my mind. Occasionally I am able to do it. But it appears that regardless of what *I* think my brain has been programmed to investigate. It's like it's involuntary; almost like I couldnt' stop it even if I wanted to.
Do you know of Shunryu Suzuki?

>bcnu...bc=binary crapola, right?...teehee, I like your >address...nu?...are you affiliated with Northwestern U.?

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. :) BCNU = be seeing you.
