Set your longevity sights MUCH higher!!

I am eating mainly steamed veg and salads, beans and nuts. I have not got into making fancy recipes yet, been too busy. I have not weighed for a while, but am feeling much healthier. I am also supplementing with Iodine and Selenium.

Additionally I have joined a gym, and been every day so far (but only 2 days) apart from today, but I intend to go this evening. Unusually, this time I feel motivated. Today I chose to go for a jog earlier because it was sunny, and I loaded all of Fuhrman's radio shows onto my phone and listened to Healthy to 100 with John Robbins. Now the jog had to turn into a walk because the ear buds were falling out, but that's OK, I still walked briskly for an hour. I'll sort that problem out for tomorrow (and go to the gym later)

Anyway I wanted to say that particular audio file is great. So good I just bought the book, Healthy at 100. It's about eating again, the several cultures he studies are doing plant based diets similar to what Fuhrman suggests. They live until amazing ages, like 120, or even 160. Not only that, but Robbins claims there are other factors involved as well as what they eat, including mental attitude. And we are not talking about poor quality life here in old age, we are talking about rich and happy lives. But everything is really turned on its head, the opposite of what one might expect. It's very much like the Bizzaro World that I remember from 1960s Superman comics. Example quotes from the book, to show you what I mean:

"Retirement is an unknown concept in Abkhasian thinking. The Abkhasians never, at any stage of life, become sedentary. Most of the elderly still work regularly, many in the orchards and gardens, pruning the fruit and nut trees, removing dead wood, and planting young trees."

"In Abkhasia, it would be considered an insult to be told that you are “looking young” or that the years have barely changed you. People there compliment others by saying “You’re looking old today,” meaning that the person is wise and beautiful in their maturity."

"In Abkhasia, when older people lie about their age, they do not give a younger age, as is common in the West. Instead, they exaggerate how old they are, for this gives them greater standing in their culture."

"In the modern Western world, older men who show an interest in sex are sometimes disparaged as “dirty old men.” In Abkhasia, on the other hand, continuation of an active sex life into old age is considered to be as natural as maintaining a healthy appetite or sound sleep."

"Abkhasian parents never scold or nag, and they never criticize or punish their children. How, you may wonder, do they get their children to behave properly? Benet explains:
Abkhasian parents express disapproval by withholding praise, which is otherwise very generously dispensed. The Abkhasian concept of discipline, considered necessary and good for children, is not intertwined with the concept of punishment. Abkhasians feel that physical punishment induces disrespect.…The Abkhasian method of discipline does not allow for the development and expression of even the mildest forms of sadistic impulse.…With no threat of punishment…the young never express resentment. It gradually became apparent to the author that they do not feel resentment."

Singing, happiness and lots of other things contribute to longevity it seems. Amazing.

For my part I am now planning to live well past 100, and taking all the neccesary steps I think fit to do so. That actually involves possible career paths to, I may now go into further study. I am re-writing my resume between emails. Two years ago I thought I would be lucky to make 80 or 90, I am now thinking I was setting my sights way way too low.

If anyone is interested in this book Robbins has a website at http://www.healthyat100.org/ and if you like mobipocket ebooks the cheapest is here at ebook crescent for $10.80. But here's a YouTube video as well, this and the radio broadcast above are free of course. If anything I think the radio broadcast is better than the YouTube video as there is a bit of dialogue on the radio. Enjoy.
