That sounds like the crown lost its outer porcelain surface, fillings do not usually have much on the outside of a tooth (hence the fill part).

If the base layer is intact there may be no immediate treatment needed other than to have it smoothed so it will not bother your tongue or act as a food trap. However, you will need to get it replaced if you have lost most of the chewing surface, or else your tooth might extrude into the new space (takes a long time).

Crowns cannot be repaired. Small chips can be smoothed or temporarily patched with composite, but there is nothing permanent to do to something thats as large as what you described.
