I think one of those books was well over $260.00, another one even more than that! Obviously they are worth much more than that for the story of the man who was told he would be dead soon, told by some of the best known doctors of his time that there was no hope! Later he would be challenged by a very experienced bicycle racer from England to an endurance race of over 1,300 miles in 19 days time...with a 50lb. load to carried as well! He won of course, eating sensibly throughout the endurance test, while the professional bicyclist struggled to keep up due to his socially accepted diet.
This was in the Spring of 1924, the 65 year old author vs. a 35 year old former bike racer, wet to the skin from rain more often than not, sleeping out in the open each night, each carrying a 50lb. pack of camping gear! Quite impressive for a man who was told a few years before that he was going to die within 2 months and there was nothing that could be done about it!
I have a rare copy of one of his books, owned by a French speaking/writing person whose notes fill the margins, he made his own study guide! Probably one of my most favorite passages from this authors book:
"Judged by all the canons of medical art, I was doomed. But I was to learn that there is a way, often for the most hoplessy decrepit, to the destination Permanent Health, which medical art has not -yet- sufficently taken into account. That is the way of Nature."
