Whatever WAS going on (and I do believe solar flares always had a severe effect on our environment), scientists have to "scientate" (keep speculating "theories") in order to stay in business (whether they're right or wrong in their theories doesn't really make a difference to them as long as the money keeps flowing) and Al Gore had alot of fun getting in the headlines for his "environmentalism", but solar cycle 24 seems to be leaving us with a "maunder minimum" (little ice age). The same happened hundreds of years ago, but technology wasn't so developed, so the effects were not so severe as they will be this time.

In 1859, there was a "Solar Tempest" that caused fires in telegraph offices, etc., but since there were no electronics then, it was not so destructive as if it had happened today. Until recently, this was a major concern for the near future (nevertheless, it was not explicitly recognized/publicized as being a cause of any "warming" because it's more 'attractive' an idea to believe that mankind is the cause...mankind always insists that it/we be in control).

Anyway, mankind can eat it's own words of "control" now that the earth is cooling with another maunder minimum.

I'm not saying that the sun should no longer be of any concern to us. NASA plans to send a spacecraft to blow up the moon next year. It is expected that this will release 1102 tons of moon fragments and dust into space (likely to have devestating effects on it's orbit).

Eventually, it is likely that daylight will be shortened ("the days will be shortened"). Unfortunately, mankind does have alot of RESPONSIBILITY for what happens, but who really has control???
