As for the bed rest - I think each body is different.
If you are fasting for spiritual/health reasons, then yes, rest is preferred.
If for weight loss, activity is encouraged.
Personally, I prefer to stay active because otherwise I'd by lying around thinking about the fact that I'm fasting, I'm not eating, etc. By staying active, my mind is engaged on other things. I do pilates every day and on some days I'll be on day-long production shoots so that's non-stop activity.
Listen to your body - it'll tell you what it wants.
