My opinion is that crazy people should not have guns. Everyone saw the result of the Virgina Tech shootings. When you give someone mentally ill a gun, nothing positive is going to happen.
I will agree that US doctors are not that great but I am going to error on the side of caution. If a qualified psychologists says that you are mentally ill, you should not have a gun. I have a mentally ill uncle. Giving him a gun would be an extremely bad idea.
I do not believe everyone on campus of Virgina Tech having a gun would have really helped matters any. It is hard to protect yourself if you do not know who the enemy is. I do not want to live in a society where I have a gun and a bullet proof vest on at all times.
That being said, I think most gun owners are law abiding citizens that never have hurt or killed anybody. The few bad eggs such as mentally insane people can make gun ownership difficult for everyone if they are more repeats of the Virgina Tech shootings.
The NRA power is really waning. If Obama is elected, the NRA will have hell to pay. John McCain is no walk in the park either. He wants to ban gun sales in gun shows without a background check.
