As turiya posted, "Man, for the most part is delusional. Saying: "It's all a part of God's plan." relieves him of any responsibility he may have in how this world exists up to now, one can go on keeping one's head buried in the sand."
I tend to agree...
God's will, "the devil made me do it", etc. etc., absolves responsibility and is too easy... I think that the whole apocalypse, in any religious "group" think or book is nothing more than history... man's history... destined to be repeated endlessly until he gets it right...
I have always liked this dialog by agent Smith...
Of course for man to ever admit that he is similar in behavior to a virus would be revolutionary, it is, in effect what we must do...
After all without virus, bacteria or fungi, we would not exist...
If one were to sit back and contemplate what is being said here, one would understand that we are but one redundant part, that the whole can get along without, if need be...
I suspect, if man has gone through the "cycle" before, he has also survived in small and large groups alike, possibly accounting for many things... similarities in DNA by seemingly separated groups, similarities in languages and the "creation" as well as the "apocalyptic" stories. I would even guess, that "tribal" culture could have been a behavior adapted to and taught to subsequent generations by those who came to believe that humans must establish their equilibrium with the rest of the natural world... thus the small groups of 40 to 60, and marriages with neighboring "tribes", the somewhat communal nature of living, etc. etc.
I tend to lean towards the Zen, Buddhism, tribal way of things... it just makes sense to me.
Most "organized" religion" seems to be looking for explanations and justifications for man's mistakes... the mistake of lets say, going to war, could have first been made by that one objection that was never uttered at the first meeting on the subject, only to escalate into the deaths of 10s of thousands...

All it will take for evil to prevail is for good people to do nothing.
All that is necessary for the forces of evil to take root in the world is for enough good men to do nothing.
All that is needed for the forces of evil to succeed is for enough good men to remain silent.
All it takes for Evil to prevail in this world is for enough good men to do nothing.
The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.

Most of us do this every day... without even realizing we are enabling or in some way through our jobs, perpetrating the evil.
The goings on in the world are not part of "God's" plan... they are "man's" plan... or more specifically the plans of the few, with no objections to amount to anything that matters.
