When can you go more than 40?

I'm on my 24th day and feel great. I swim, workout on regular basis and the fast is as easy as it gets to me. I only lost 12 pounds, which is great. I don't have much to loose to begin with :)
I wish the fast would have healed my sinuses already, though I still have another 17 days to go.
I target 40 days and at this point of time, there seem to be no barrier from accomplishing this goal. My mental and physical abilities are great.
However, my friend, which is a biologist, says that the body can suddenly collapse, even without any prior sign or warning. She claims that going so long can be dangerous.
1. Is it safe to do 40 days? Am I assured that as long as I feel great, I can keep going safely?
2. The book says that in severe cases you can go beyond 40 days. How long can you go? Have anyone ever done more than 40? Why 40 then?
