Kidney problems

My husband has noticed that his urine has been foamy and both his ankles and feet have become extremely swollen in the past couple of weeks. At times the swelling travels up his legs to his calves, knees and thighs. He went to an acupuncturist without any results. He then had an urinalysis done and the result was a high level of protein in his urine indicating issues with his kidneys. I was told protein is needed to aid the body in getting rid of excess water. But since it's being flushed out of his body, water is then building up inside resulting in his swollen ankles and feet. What can he do to help repair his kidneys using natural means? What would make his kidneys function this way?
