This is a common mistake that many people make.

Genesis 2:7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

There was no soul until there was life. The body was dead until God gave it the "breath(spark?) of life". Then it became a soul.
