Re: Clear scalp for seven years now

Clindamycin is also available by prescription in the form of a gel and/or solution. I use it and it provides relief when used with internal Antibiotics .

However, I doubt anyone will be 'cured' using this topical solution. I'm sure you're getting good results with a shaved head along with the anti-bacterial agent you've applied because the hair follicule doesn't have an opportunity to grow therefore it's unable to develop into an infection. Have you ever allowed your hair to grow back again? If it reoccurs after hair growth then there was no cure just relief.

I always wanted to try shaving my head and applying bleach on the scalp over the course of many months. Has anyone tried this? But then again..when the hair grows back I'm sure the folliculitis will return since I've come to the conclusion folliculitis is an internal problem and the infection along with the symptoms appear on the surface of the skin.

Unfortunately, I feel there is no cure for the most severe cases of folliculitis only relief. I've been on Ery-tab Antibiotics 500mg x2 a day and use either Emgel (Erythromycin Topical Gel) or Topical Clindamycin for 10 years. I also shampoo with Hibiclens daily as someone else mentioned. This serves one purpose for me. It keeps the scalp area free from bacteria between topical treatments mentioned above (from scratching and brushing your hair) which could spread into more areas of folliculitis. As long as I stay on this treatment plan the folliculitis is under control. If I stop treatment it comes back worse than ever.

It took many tries to find the right Antibiotic that worked for me so you need to find which Antibiotic or antifungal works best for you. Yes, you might have both bacterial and fungal folliculitis and might need both Antibiotics and antifungals instead of one versus the other so it's best to have a culture performed by a Dermatologist.
