I'm a student from The Royal College of Art in London, and I'm doing my Architecture Master's degree on the effects of cosmetic surgery.

My particular study is the effect of cosmetic surgery on our views of death. I would like to know how people who have had cosmetic surgery would like their bodies treated once they have passed away.
I am particularly interested in the more fantastical ideas people have, but which they don't think are feasible, about how they would like their bodies treated and how they want to be remembered.

Any ideas or views will be most welcomed.

Hi! I’ve been planning to do rhinoplasty. I’ve got a nasal hump. It’s been difficult for me to at times to breathe. I'm a little affected by theway it looks.I’ve decided to go for a surgery at Dr. Kreidstein’s clinic in Toronto.Being a working woman, I cannot take much leaves. I cannot spend too much time taking rest at home. I’m pretty much concerned regarding the recovery time. None of my relative or friend has gone through this. Hence, I do not exactly know how long it would take to recover. I can take a maximum of 3-4 days off. And I’ve read somewhere that in some surgeries it may even take lesser than that. Is it so?

    Hello here. One of the most important steps in assuring a satisfactory rhinoplasty outcome is selecting the right surgeon. Since rhinoplasty ranks among the most challenging of all cosmetic procedures, at a bare minimum you should find a surgeon with genuine rhinoplasty expertise, considerable rhinoplasty experience, and a resume of consistently favorable results. Because of these I've found Dr. Rino Lorenzo in Manila and I'm very happy with my result. Today is my 4th month of post op and my nose is still swollen especially at the tip but I'm already satisfied with it as I know it will get better and better as the weeks go on. I had a tummy tuck last march. I have not scarred well and took a very long time to heal. I had my drains in for over a month. Most people get theirs out in a week. I still have problems with swelling and my cellulite is worse than it has ever been. I am very thin and was before the surgery. I had a lot of loose skin and stretch marks from my 2 previous pregnancies. I did a couple of tests that I ordered on line for heavy metals and tested posative. I did a quick heavy metal cleanse and went to get my surgery. If I knew then what I know now. I started having breakouts about a year ago on my head and chin. I got my first stretch mark when I was 15 I started developing cellulit at 23 a few years after my tonsils were removed. I know now that my liver and lymph probably haven't been working very well for awhile. I am 36. I have been doing some dry skin brushing. And resumed my heavy metal cleanse. I did not scar well and was told I will need some kind of scar therapy. Is there a particular way for me to do the dry skin brushing. Have a permanently screwed up my lymph system with my tummy tuck and earlier tonsillectomy. I want to try and repair some of the damage that I ignorantly did to myself.

  I can only comment on the scar and stretch mark issue. I have been using a dermaroller for both, and getting really good results. It can be a little painful, but the pain is quick and not lastin ....

  I was unlucky to get stretchmarks worse than others, but strangly lucky to respond to the therapy very well, some are almost gone and my C-section scar is disapearing nicely. It also tightened up my skin.
  
  Not everyone will respond as well as I have though, but some get really great results. It's worth trying.
  
  Lot's of info on the web, there are a couple of forums out there to get support from. I buy the cheap rollers from ebay though, I don't buy from the forums or the brand names.

    I am 38 and I had both a tummy tuck & a breast lift at the same time in March of 2010. I breast feed 3 kids so my breasts were full on the bottom and flat on the top. They were also very big while breast feeding, usa size G. After choosing good doctor Dr Rino Lorenzo in Manila,Philippines, he and I decided on a lift with a small implant 32dd. It sounds big but it fits my frame nicely. Before my surgery I did a lot of running and got in good shape so after surgery I didn’t feel comfortable working out for about 8 weeks due to my tummy tuck procedure. I feel no regrets and my husband loves them!

One of my friends also suffers rib pain after her tummy tuck surgery and her surgeon recommended yoga for her. You said you have been trying yoga. Did it bring any relief in the pain? I am getting lipo on May 9th!!

I am wondering if I should go on a juice fast for 5-7 days?
Fat cells shrink so I am thinking they will get more fat cells out!
Then again, they may not remove enough volume and when I start eating again it wil all be for waste?

      I am finding there is such a lack of support for this. I am booked to have mine done in April, but some days i feel really excited about it and cant wait...others i feel dread and i dont want it done. i just dont know what to do.
      
      Since i wasx young i got picked on, bullied etc..but it just made me stronger really. I have a loving boyfriend who loves me just the way i am...but theres still that awful feeling of walking into a room and know immediately what everyone is looking at.       I had a rhinoplasty a few years ago and although the result is not perfect (the tip/nostrils were reduced and it is not completely symmetrical)I do not regret for a second that I did it. I was so self-conscious of my nose that I even felt uncomfortable each time people could see me in profile. I had wanted to get rid of my old nose so badly for so many years that nobody would have made me change my mind.
      So ultimately this is the test. Only YOU know whether it is just a fad or a true problem that can be helped, bearing in mind that there are risks and that results are not guaranteed. I personally also found it difficult to get used to my new appearance because a new nose does change a face a lot (particularly if more or less every single bit of the nose has been changed!).
      
      I feel really sorry for Carrie and Debi and I agree with them that if your nose is not too ugly to start off with, then there will be little improvement potentially but still the same risks.
      
      And by the way, this 'nose with character' phrase is rubbish. If you hate your nose you'll never see it as 'having character'. It just makes you hate yourself.

      I had my nose done by one of the supposed best surgeons in NYC. The only reason I cautioned you is because you have right to know that there are bad results out there along with good results, no matter who you go to.
      
      I do not know what you look like, and maybe you are a good candidate for the surgery.
      As for me, I went in to improve my photographic appearance. I had, among other things, modeled in NY in my 20's. My nose was basically good.
      
      However, as I reached my middle 30's, my bridge thinned out making my tip and nostrils look bulbous and flared in photos. My surgery was to correct this minor defect. Instead, I came out with a "Barbara Streisand" nose with a truly bulbous tip and flaring nostrils. I have been ruined and none of the other deities of US plastic surgery are willing to attempt to fix this disaster for fear of worsening my situation.
      
      However, if your only problem is a thick bridge or a hooked bridge and not a tip or alae problem, it seems most any competent rhino doctor can adequately correct this problem to most people's satisfactions.
      
      So, I agree, it depends on what your nose looks like now - just be aware that the consequences, good or bad, are assumed by you for the remainder of your life!

    I totally agree with Debi-if is not that bad-LEAVE IT ALONE.
    
    I too researched my rhinoplasty and read these message boards before surgery but went ahead anyway and every day I regret my decision and would give anything to have my old nose back.
    
    I disregarded unhappy messages thinking "they must have had bad surgeons etc.," well I had the best and my nose looks worse than what I had.
    
    My advice-if it isn't that bad-DON'T DO IT-

    It is true-it changes your life-for the worse-I want to cry every time I look in the mirror-and to know I brought it all upon myself-sorry to be depressing-but I want to save others from the emotional hell I am in.

It's kind of silly but I was wondering if anyone knew any good ways or products you could use to hide the effect of EC on your lips? I'm not talking about managing the condition, I'm talking about hiding the condition and its obvious damage on your lips. Purely cosmetic reasons.

For example: my lips are rather darker as I'm African American (lighter skinned), and you can notice on my upper lip where my lip is not affected (as it's darker there) and where my lips become affected by EC (it's lighter).

I also say this because I'm going to be getting my first job very soon and I'm super nervous about how I'll feel there and want to know if there's like a product or anything I could do to make my lips, specificallly upper lip, look more natural and darker. Hell, I'll even take makeup lol

(ALSO: quick question, does the whole lip laser surgery help with the appearance of Exfoliative Cheilitis?)

  Anyway, aren't some African-American people's inner lips naturally pinker? There was a post here way back about people saying how Dwayne Wade has EC but I disagree. Walking around the streets and talking to people, I have noticed that it is common for some African-American people to have contrasting colors between the outer and the inner lips.
  
  And no, surgery has been discussed here and some have tried only to report about it being a total waste of money.

But I have seen brown and black people with pinker lips. My upper lip from what I can remember was consistently the same color, as was my lower. I'm thinking the multiple shaded lips is more common in those with darker skin.
    
    As for Dwayne, I could see how people think that but I'm sure he doesn't have it.
    
    And yeah, I never had and hope for lip surgery to cure but I was wondering if it would visually provide relief. I don't think I've seen any before and after pics of people who went through with the procedures.

      I don't think he has it either. Most exercises, especially if you are an athlete, will somehow cause you to mouthbreathe at times and we know that doesn't help at all with EC. I actually had to stop playing soccer because of this. Even going to the gym and lifting really heavy makes me mouthbreathe.
      
      So this post mainly has to do with your lips visually looking off due to the color? Or does this still have something to do with the crusts?

If properly moisturized, all of my symptoms are basically suppressed but are still there. But while the symptoms are gone, my lips still look like they've been affected by EC.   One option is to keep one lip looking OK but lightly rubbing and leaving the other lip alone so that it can heal. If you only have EC on one lip this obviously won't be a problem.
  
  The other option is to lightly trim the dead skin when it crusts and curls upwards.
  
  Yellowing/orange colour of the lips comes from eating foods that stain like pasta sauce. Try to avoid this.
  
  The lips look worse when wet, so avoid licking them.
  
  Other than this you have to be brave. Try to avoid looking in mirrors as it can become a a vicous cycle and you end up going out less and less.
  
  The worst part about EC is it affects the mechanics of the mouth. When scabs are thick and dry I cannot smile without tearing or ripping the lips.

I am concerned about my sister who Rhinoplasty two days before. Her eyes have bruised badly and appears brutal. We consulted her PS and he said it is normal after surgery and will go off. Just wanted to know from experienced guys. Anyone had gone through this?
