I've been experiencing ill health despite six weeks of fasting and eating extremely healthy. I neglected to eat my regular helpings of kombu and didn't connect it until faith and wom were discussing the Iodine issue in chat so I got to thinking bout my negligence. I decided to apply Lugol's this morning to the bottom of my feet before I left for work, by the time I got to work the stain was gone. I applied more at about lunch hour to my feet, legs and arms. When I got home this evening they were gone so I was discussing this with faith and decided to apply it directly to my thyroid...it literally looked like I was putting water on my throat, there was ABSOLUTELY NO STAIN! It took 8 applications to get a slight light stain! I have since applied it four times and finally have a med/light stain. I also applied it to my breast tissue, three times before I got a slight stain, ovary area and that stained the best than any area I applied it to. I feel like I could bathe in it! I would imagine the depletion of this magnitude is due to the fast I was on and neglect to eating my kombu. The last time I was this deficient was four years ago when I had never used Lugol's or kombu.
Don't forget to eat your kombu! First saturate with Lugol's! = )

Why put it on different areas?
Will the skin just absorb Iodine until it doesn't "need" anymore? And you use the Lugol's for topical as well as internal application? When I was in high school we used to make "Monkey Piss" -- Iodine and baby oil -- with a little bottle you get at the drug store.
That and all of this is really interesting. I am going to go through the posts here as I have heard about it on other forums.

Thanks for all that stuff. I listened to the link Trapper posted over the weekend, and went through Fleches' site, so I am more wondering about experience right now. You are such a good info-gatherer! I am a voracious seeker of info, to the point where I can confuse "finding out about" with "doing" -- now it is time to take action!
I am still wondering:
1) Why apply the Iodine to a particular place on your skin?
2) Will the skin just absorb Iodine until it doesn't "need" anymore?
3) So you use the Lugol's for topical as well as internal application?
My problem right now is that it is so cold out. I would like to go to CVS and get one of those little bottles of iodine, if only to have that smell take me back to 8th grade and trying to get a tan at Bethany Beach. What happened to those warm-weather days we were having in December and January? More of those, please, from whoever doles them out!

Hey, Laura,
1) I applied to inner arm as that is what is specified in literature. I applied to breast because breast tissue needs lots of iodine. BTW, the Iodine I applied to my breast is but a distant memory(12 hrs) as is both patches applied to arm(12 hrs/18hrs).
2)I suppose(?), but we do need to face the outside world occasionally:) I'll be taking it internally.
3) You can use plain old drugstore Iodine for the patch test
BONUS) What was wrong with eighth grade? Sweet mystery, raging hormones, righteous indignation... :)

Gather some info for me, my dear! I am still not up to speed on this, there's a lot of info in a short time. And you know what I've found out about info gathering/doing over time? It all comes together, when the time is right. And we find ourselves well prepared... :)

Thanks for the post, again.
8th grade was awesome. Especially that summer of lying at the beach, accelerating tanning with Monkey Piss -- the oil-iodine combo solution for girls in the know! I think I used it in one form or another in boarding school and college....
Cold is good, absolutely. But it can make going out with two little ones more of a challenge. We head for places where they can run around inside. What I have learned is that if you have dogs or kids, best to be near a college. They are usually pretty dog- and kid-friendly.
So, I can patch-test with drugstore iodine, but better to ingest Lugol's. A cold day is what Internet shopping is there for, right?

This is a reply to # 830,411Yes, the Iodine will only be absorbed as long as the body requires it, after it is saturated it will no longer take it in, regular consumption of Iodine rich foods to keep it plentiful in your system.
No, it does not matter where you apply it. When I started this four years ago I put it directly on my thyroid for a few days then switched and used another area and after two weeks of this the stain remained and I then continued eating my Iodine rich foods.
If you eat a very stringent diet you can deplete very easy so it is very important to keep this in your body even whilst fasting, which is what I failed to do this last few months, depletion that fast!
I'm still shocked that my body took that much in!

This is a reply to # 830,308The reason I put it on different areas is because Iodine is used all over the body, the largest concentration of it in the thyroid. No, I don't take Lugol's internally and that is to each his own as to how they would like to take Lugol's. I had one experience years ago where I had gotten hives but now I believe that was due to the high toxic levels of stuff in my body so it probably just responded with overload when given the much needed iodine. I may yet try a drop or two with water this time around and see how I fair.
Yes, I recall the baby oil/iodine mixture for sunbathing, loved the tan with that stuff.

Does it "work" differently if you apply it externally vs. ingesting it? I mean, the Lugol's specifically.
Where exactly is the thyroid? Can you talk a little bit about applying it externally in various places? I mean, could you apply a patch over one area that would deplete more quickly than another?
I do wonder what bright Tween came up with the iodine-in-oil idea, and if there is really some connection between iodine, oil, and accelerated tanning!
One thing I have realized reading through these posts is that I am somewhat inculcated with the idea that Iodine is harmful in all but the smallest quantities. (Is it Iodine that makes Mercurochrome stain? That keeps coming to mind.) Although I know when I was hiking on the AT for a few months one year and did not want to schlep a purifier, I used a *lot* of Iodine tablets to clean my water. And was fine, to the best of my knowledge!
