Thanks for sharing that! I actually read the Bible from time to time, and can even see exactly where Jesus was mis-quoted in some way; or rather, where the essence is preserved, but has to be read carefully in order not to be missed.
But, I really don't remember any place in the Bible where Jesus says anything significant or even remotely connected to something like - "Let's have priests, and then Cardinals, and the Pope and then tithing..."
What I do remember, and it really stands out and is most inspirative, are things like "if you people had even a grain of real faith in you, you could move mountains". Or things like "How do you know the tree? By the fruit it bears. And that's how you will know the real prophets - by the fruit of their labors." or something to that effect. I even said that to one psychic when he asked me if I believed him - I just said, you know, if you're for real, then everything you said will come about, as simple as that.
Jesus even said that we DON'T need to go any place special as we carry our faith in our heart. He wasn't against building churches, just didn't consider it essential; certainly didn't suggest making golden crosses and expensive stained glass windows (although I can appreciate those as an art form, but it's also a type of waste which is money not well spent). To make it even worse, in more then one place he says that the guy who is praying every day for few hours and is fasting so much that it shows, and is doing all kinds of ceremonious things, has no faith compared to the businessman who came to the church to ask God quietly to forgive him his sins while making sure no one knows he's even there.
So for me, what's most bothersome about the church and organized religion today, is that those things that are really important that Jesus said, some so simple yet so wise, are not really mentioned much. While other things, that were not even His words, but rather coming from his disciples or some other people, are quoted ad nauseum. I mean - after all, the whole belief system is called Christianity and not "Christianity as we see fit based on people whose names were not Christ".
But then, I am trying to imagine the Pope saying something to this effect: People, just as Jesus Christ said - make sure you check whether something or someone is for real based on the fruits of their labor. Those who claim that they come from God or are His messangers - let them perform a miracle or two, heal an innocent child for instance, and then you'll know that they REALLY are not frauds... Here, take me for instance..."
