I believe any problems we are seeing with food cultivation, packaging and distribution is in the end, a result of poor farming practices over the last 100 years starting to come back and bite us in the butt.
I do not know how many lives the spinach thing has taken, nor do I know how many people have gotten sick, but I would be willing to bet it is far less than the 3 - 400 a day that die from legal prescription medication AND the tens of thousands more who are sick from the medications side effects.
If you do feel the need to wash your vegetables (I just rinse mine as I believe washing destroys good bacteria as well) I am only familiar with H2O2.
Cleansing for vegetables and salad greens: Add 1/4 cup 3% hydrogen peroxide to a sink full of cold water. Wash vegetables thoroughly, rinse with cold water and drain. This process prolongs freshness.
