I have found making dietary changes, as well as positive lifestyle changes, very useful for controlling/healing IBD. I have found the concepts outlined in the Fit for Life books by Harvey & Marilyn Diamond (based on Natural Hygiene) really work for me, especially the principle of food combining. It is a very easy diet to follow and you will notice positive changes happening in your body almost immediately.
I have been food combining for about 10 weeks now. I am not taking medication and have been getting better everyday. I have had Crohn's disease for 20 years. I was so sick, I didn't think diet would make that much of a difference, especially as all my gastros have told me it isn't a factor. I was getting really desperate for a solution, especially as I could see how my illness was negatively impacting my 3 year old son. I had tried lots of things (& spent lots of money!) but nothing really helped for more than 3 months. The difference following this diet is amazing. For the first time, I can see that my body is actually getting a chance to rebuild and heal itself. I can see that although the healing is slow and incremental, it is permanent. I am so much better than I was 10 weeks ago, it is amazing.
I have also made positive changes in other areas, mainly not pushing myself and allowing myself to rest, changing mental attitudes, renewing my relationship with God and reshaping my priorities. Now that I am starting to have more energy and feel better, I am starting to exercise again - something I haven't been able to do for a long time.
I urge you to try it. You have nothing to lose, don't have to spend anything and it can't hurt you.
One word from experience: Don't trust doctors to manage your condition for you.
When it comes to IBD, they really have no idea what is happening in your body. Listen to them, if you want to go down that route, but take charge of your own health, do what works for you and be committed to finding your own solutions.
Everyone I have read about who has recovered from this condition has had this attitude.
All the best. There is hope.
