I've been trying to learn more about Lobelia for several months now, main reason being that I'd like to either grow my own OR if lucky find a patch growing wild and harvest it that way. There are many many variations of Lobelia, several even sold in commercial nurseries in the flower section, but these are generally not the variety you want for herbal uses. The variation that is best known for it's numerous & beneficial herbal/health properties is officially known as Lobelia Inflata. It is supposed to be native to various parts of the unites States, especially eastern half. This time of year is just past the period when it came into full bloom, unfortunately I have a problem with poison ivy so this really puts a crimp on searching the woodlands and meadows :(
In any case, like many other herbs with beneficial properties, Lobelia can be used in various forms, starting with the plain herb itself, fresh, or dried, and especially the seeds - contain a high concentration of the beneficial compounds. You can smoke it - Indian Tobacco is just one of it's many old-time nick-names.... as is Puke Weed.....which is indicative of one of the ways it can be used to produce exreme beneficial results - by causing a purging of the contents of the stomach and other mucous membranes such as bronchial tubes.
There seems to be a belief that is somewhere between myth and lore that says Lobelia was can help with quitting smoking. I cannot vouch for this, but I can attest that the use of a combined Lobelia and Mullein tincture really helped me to gete over a couple different bouts of bronchitis. The puking method comes from taking relatively large doses over a short period; Dr. John Christopher is somewhat famous for having cured a person who'd suffered 30 years with chronic asthma, using the puke-dose, which yielded it's curing results over the period of the next 5 hours during which the patient coughed up, gagged up, and regurgitated all kinds of nasty black suff from the stomach and lungs! However, when taking in smaller doses, the effects are less extreme, such as a generally loosening and improving of the breathing pathways and also helps to expel / expectorate gunk from the lungs a little bit at a time..... so this would definitely be a good aid during and after giving up the smokes to help restore lung capacity and general function. Speaking of smoking, the good news for you is that at 10 days, you'd already gotten past the physicial hooks. Good job! The less than good news is, the mental hooks can be a lot worse to rid.
Ideally, like any herb, it's best to grow your own, just not practical in a lot of cases, so second best is to source them from somebody you feel you can trust. Of the numerous on-line herb providers I've come across, there are a couple that will sell Lobelia in fresh-cut bulk and a few of these will also sell the seeds, at a premium, but I'm thinking of trying this next year when spring gardening season comes around again. Some of these sources also provide Lobelia in a
