Here's a glowing review of the unabridged edition that you most likely won't have seen. He doesn't mention the typos, so it's quite possible this problem has now been resolved. Whether you go for this or the shorter version depends largely on the level of committment you think your dad will want to devote to the subject. If he has the staying power, is in no great hurry, etc., I'd go for THKOH max.
MacArthur is dead wrong about that of course, as he is also about his precious millennium. I don't know about the current situation, but while he was alive, the Rev. John Robert Boyd of Sudbury, Ontario, organized regular conferences on prophecy which I believe were held at his own church - Jarvis Street Baptist Church. I remember seeing them announced in The Researcher, the Finalist quaterly that he edited.
True, Finalist conferences may not be so numerous as those of the 'rapturist' cult. One reason I would suggest is that our perspective of the past and outlook for the future is much more settled than theirs. We don't need to constantly revise our 'interpretations', or try to ascertain with pinpoint accuracy exactly where we are in God's program for the future based on the latest geopolitical developments.
Indeed, we regard such speculation as unprofitable, and potentially downright dangerous. How many false prophets have come and gone after failing in their 'mission' to identify the antichrist, the time of the rapture or 'the end', etc., usually after filling their bank accounts with their gullible followers' hard-earned cash?
I recall seeing one reviewer of a Finalist book complain that the author used J N Darby, W E Blackstone and C I Scofield as representative authorities for Dispensationalism!! Apparently, these were outdated, and the author should instead have used more recent authors in order to engage with Dispensationalism. Imagine that, the founding fathers of Dispensationalism no longer considered de rigueur when it comes to establishing its basic tenets. Has it really changed that much since J N Darby?
Well then, let's have a conference so we can sort out what we believe today, as opposed to what they believed then. How's that unity of purpose & beliefs coming along fellas? Pre-Mid-Post trib? Classic or Dispensational chiliasm? Christ reigning on earth or from heaven? Real or memorial animal sacrifices? An eternally separate future for Israel or part of the church? The list is almost endless, so it's no wonder they need endless conferences to indulge their passion for fruitless debate.
Compare that with the beauty, simplicity, and unity of the Finalist position. True, there are some very minor differences, as you might expect wherever humans are involved, but they are as nothing compared to the fault lines that run through chiliasm.
Having said all that, here is one conference where Finalism at least makes a noteworthy appearance:
You're confusing me with trapper. He knows better than every Christian who has ever lived, better than all the accepted creeds of the faith, better than the writers of Holy Writ.
If you want a case study in the arrogance of true delusion, study trapper. Wasn't he your hero until recently? What changed? Did you finally see the light?
Then start praying for his mortal soul.
As I said elsewhere, a sad case of the blind leading the blind.
So instead of simply trading scripture passages with you, let's see if you can understand this analogy. What if I were to approach all the acknowledged leaders, teachers and authorities, etc., of all the main branches of Islam, and tell them all that they've got it all wrong? That the Qu'ran has nothing to do with what they believe, but instead teaches something quite different. That their beliefs are no more than their own man-made impositions on their own holy book.
Now, how do you imagine they will respond to such a message from me, and can you see any connection at all between that and what trapper is doing in these threads? Coz if you can, then you are well on your way to understanding why you are wrong about my 'judgment' of trapper.
The issue is not trapper per se, but the grievous errors he advocates and publishes, and which you apparently approve. I say again, run. Run away from his lies. Run as far and as fast as you can and save your own soul, or you will end up with him in the other place.
