Ok I made it there today. Overall it seems like it always has been. Lots of stuff there, but getting less over the years in my opinion.
The tide wasn't that low today and we were about an hour or so late for low tide, so I know we missed the sand dollars and starfish since they are out in deeper water. I did see two starfish, but they were underwater by the time I got there. And one of the crabbers said there were tons of them at the bridge you have to cross to get to the island.
You can see at least 5 baby fish here.
You can see at least 8 more here. I saw at least 30 total.
There were about a dozen seagulls there, which is normal.
Here's some brown seaweed with some kind of green seaweed.
Here's a couple more types of seaweed.
Here's the holes in the sand from clams. Lots of them all over.
Here's a bucket of clams someone had caught. About 2-3
inches across. Probably 20 at least?
Here's a single clam I found just laying on the beach that they missed. About 2
inches across. He had a clump of baby barnacles attached to his side. I saw a couple more too.
Here's about a 6
inch crab underwater.
Here's a crabber that was catching the crabs. He had about 6 in the ice chest.
Here's some kind of sea creature and a little 2
inch baby crab that was ready to tear me up. :-) But you can see, there is seaweed everywhere, which is usual.
I wasn't able to get to the sand dollar beds since the tide wasn't that low today and we got there a little late. But there were dead sand dollars on the beach, which I think shows they are still there.
Here's a bed of muscles. If you zoom in you can see it's solid muscles.
You can see a couple orange snails underwater here.
Here's the view of the beach looking north.
Here's the view looking back south again where I came from after walking about a mile north. My wife is in that pic somewhere. There was the usual amount of seaweed & insects. (Sand shrimp, sand fleas, spiders and bee looking bugs)
And here's the view looking even further north from the northern most point I walked to. There is mile's of beach.
And I forgot to bring a new radiation sticker, so I used the one that's been in my wallet since 2011. So it may not be a valid test. But I put a couple of drops of the seawater on it and wiped it off and took the picture. Sorry for it not being centered and blurry, but it didn't change from when I took it out of my wallet. You can see the strip on top of the picture is not dark.
So I don't know. To me it looks like things are "normal". There is still a lot of sea creatures and plants, but there aren't as many as when I first started going there in the 90's. I noticed it had more of a smell of sewer too. So I'm thinking it's all due to pollution. Just my opinion. Also notice how the barnacles, shells and water is more dark or brown? I'm thinking it's due to the pollution too.
But I really don't see how those guys in the video could say there is nothing left any more.
People didn't really want me taking pictures of their catches until I talked to them for a little bit and they realized I wasn't associated with our "government", (which isn't hard for me to prove) ;-) and just doing documentation on my own.
Overall a good day. Went to a local seafood restaurant afterwards and had the Captains plate with all kinds of seafood. Coconut shrimp was the best!
