Hello all,
A close friend of mine, John, who is 52 yrs. old, was just diagnosed with stage 4 Squamous cell carcinoma of the neck and throat. He sees an oncologist for the first time on Tuesday, March 4,2014.
His primary care physician told him he has a 75% chance of recovery, based on what, I don't know, but my research and personal experience tell me otherwise.
In 2010, my brother died 8 months after being diagnosed with stage 3 Squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus. In 2012, another close friend of mine was dead 2 months after being diagnosed with throat cancer. He was gone so quickly that I didn't even get a chance to see him before I got a crushing phone call from his family, telling me he had just passed.
In both cases they received only radiation and Chemo. There was no surgery.
As a child, my father watched "his" father die from cancer at the age of 39 and then he had to watch his son suffer the same fate, at the age of 39 also. The radiation/chemo combination seemed to have made a horrible situation even worse and like many others, we always ask ourselves if my brother might have lived a little longer and suffered a lot less if he had received no treatment at all.
I have about 6 or 8 hours of research time under my belt familiarizing myself with some of the alternative methods of treatment, so I have a reasonable idea of the big picture involving the diet and supplements associated with curing cancer, but it will take a lot more time before I could possibly feel comfortable sharing any particular options with him and his family.
His wife and daughter are well aware of the risks involved and they were the ones who actually reached out to me, for help in finding an alternative option to radiation, chemo and surgery. I promised them I will do everything in my power, to put as much information as possible in front of them, so that their energies can be better spent caring for John, both physically and emotionally.
John and I both live in Virginia Beach, VA. If anyone knows of any current or soon to be starting experimental studies or treatments that do not dramatically compromise the immune system and are located within a reasonable driving distance from here, we would be very interested in finding out more about them.
I was also hoping that someone could help direct me towards a link that would supply some of the obvious questions that a patient might ask their oncologist during their first visit, if they were not comfortable jumping right into radiation treatments and chemotherapy.
I have quite a few questions written down already, but I thought some members might have already compiled a more comprehensive and informed list than the one I have come up with myself.
These questions will also help me to be able to answer some of the follow up questions that might be asked by some of the members of this forum. It will also help to expediate the process of crafting a plan going forward.
Most importantly, please direct me towards any and all treatments that any of you have intimate knowledge of, that have resulted in a positive outcome, fighting a cancer similar to what John is currently dealing with.
As soon as I submit this post, I am going to dive into some of the other messages and responses available on this forum in hopes of finding some recent, real life treatments and successes from survivors of stage 4 throat and neck cancer. If anyone knows of a particularly relevant discussion on this topic, please share it with me.
I can't in good conscious watch John suffer the way that my brother did. I desperately want him to have a fighting chance. If anyone has any input or suggestions,by all means, please chime in.
I promise to keep everyone updated on John's progress, good or bad, along with the treatments being used and any significant details involving them.
Thanks in advance for any and all help and recommendations received.
