MoreHi,
Everyone always talking about psychological and social problems that TMAU brings and I always read how sufferers of TMAU beside that appears to be healthy.
But I do not think that's true.
Recently, I have problems with my throat, a cough, and I have pains. Also, my eyes sometimes burns and tears.
Furthermore, since I live in a building, I notice how this disease affects other people. A woman who lives in the apartment below my constantly coughing (worst than me) and vomiting, and it sounds as if she suffocates.
So I wanted to ask you guys if you also noticed any such physical problems or manifestations which can be attributed to TMAU?Advertisement

This is a reply to # 1,992,801Sorry to hear that I don't know if I have TMAU but I am getting tested for it. Just recently I noticed when I go out people would cough and sneeze. I live in an apartment and so far I haven't seen any reaction but I always make sure I open all the windows at night to let the odor out. I can't smell myself so it's hard to know what works. Good luck hope things get better!

That's the problem with trimethilamine. It`s so strong that it will find its way even through closed windows or any way it could.
Athough she must be allergic since other neighbors don`t have a nearly similar reactions.
Now the question is - should I tell her? On the one hand, I`m very sorry for what happened to her, on the other is a bit embarrassed to admit that is because of me. And even if I tell her what she`s supposed to do? To move out? Awful situation.
I think we all should insist on such problems at corresponding levels. Maybe they would hurry up a bit with finding a cure if they realize the problem is not individual but common.
It should be pointed out on Wikipedia too.
"Appears to be healthy". Yeah, right ...

This is a reply to # 1,993,511Don't tell her maybe she is sick from something else. Have you been diagnosed for TMAU? Do you follow the low choline diet? Take supplement ? there are many people put there that control there symptoms through strict diet.

It's a little harder to be tested from here where I am, but I have all the symptoms of TMAU long time so I'm pretty sure. I follow the diet as much as I can.

This is a reply to # 1,993,956I have other issues with my health such as allergies and sinus problems, but I don't think it's related. The only other condition I can think of that would be related would be digestive problems.

and I feet my smell travels upto 100 mtrs and can pass through close window...Thats awful, but opening windows helps a little

This is a reply to # 1,992,801I think you are right. In fact liver disease is known to cause this problem and it doesn't make any sense to me that someone could smell so bad and be healthy. It's a bacterial overgrowth most likely for almost everyone except the tiny few with this FOS3 variation. If we were so healthy we would smell like everyone else, right?
The odor makes me sick. It makes me want to vomit and wakes me up at night. My own eyes burn as does my throat and nose. It makes me cough just like I am making other people cough when I go out. It is no coincidence that I can stand in a huge gallery in a huge museum and after a few minutes almost everyone coughs. Not hacking or sick, clearing their throats, most of them unconsciously at that.
I don't think i am giving anyone an actual illness like cigarette smoke or poisonous chemicals. TMA is natural to the body. It smells bad but it's not a foreign substance.
Please do not mention this to anyone where you live. If you are that worried move out yourself -- you can't ask all your neighbors to move out and if your landlord hears about this you may get evicted. And you may need a reference for getting another flat.
You are very kind to be concerned. And I understand your problem. I am on the first floor and I make the basement smell sometimes. And, sure, like that's coming off the concrete any time soon . . .
I feel your pain but do not cause your self more for no good reason, please!

This is a reply to # 2,005,201Ms. Rancid, everything you said is like my life mapped out: nausea, burning eyes, coughing ... and all that my doctor can not explain, so it must be related to something special like TMAU. For example, I have a sinus inflammation for which I have to clean my throat. But why? It lasts for nearly two months and is still going even though I had so many Antibiotics . Sure, maybe it started as a viral / bacterial, I do not know that, but now something makes it chronically.
And those are just my thoughts: if everyone in a room (should I say a big hall?) clearing their throats because of me, why I would not I? It`s so logical. Obviously I'm not immune to my own smell. And it would be a bit strange if I did, since it is so strong.
I do not want someone to misunderstand, but I think it's almost silly to say that someone with this condition - is healthy.
I think the only reason it is not documented it`s this is a rare disease. I mean, how many of us are there? 1% of the world population as I understand it. How many of them do not know anything about this state and can`t discuss it, how many of them does not even go online, etc ... And the age limit is concerned too, I had no such problems when I was younger but the situation gets complicated over the years. I`m sayng, if you can not find something and read it, does`t mean it does`t exist.
I still doing some tests about my conditions but everything seems to lead to that. I`ll post if I knew more.
Hoping4433, what the doctor says about your sinus problems and allergies. Do you know exactly why you got them?
