This is a little off the subject of CS, but thought my experience might help someone with the same type of problem I've recently encountered. CS turned my life around three years ago and I will be forever grateful. It stopped chronic and repeated lung infections which often resulted in pneumonia. For infections of all kinds, CS is the answer!
Starting last January, after working one day in my wood shop, I suddenly became very congested with heavy coughing. Nebulizing with CS had no effect. No one was able to identify the problem or offer a solution that worked. Staying away from the shop a few days and the problem would ease during the day, but would return at night. Just momentarily stepping into the shop, and I would be worse that night. I slept poorly from the crackling and wheezing. Taking Clear Lungs tabs helped a little but the problem persisted. Also, albuterol dud not help.
Casting around for anything that would help, one afternoon I put about 3/8 inch of 3% food grade hydrogen peroxide, H2O2, in the bowl of my nebulizer. As might be expected I started coughing heavily and brought up gobs of white mucus. After finishing the H2O2 my lungs were almost clear and by bedtime I could breathe freely. I had my first good night's sleep in weeks. Next day I would be fine for a while but congestion and coughing gradually returned by evening. So I continued using H2O2 in the afternoon or evening and had no problem sleeping. Staying out of the shop a few days and I would be better, but back in the shop and the problem returned.
In my search for the cause, I purchased a 3M respirator with a filter designed to stop formaldehyde, as I suspected that might be the culprit. An hour in the shop with the mask on -- and it did seal tightly -- still the same old problem! I went to a respiratory specialist but so far he has had nothing to offer except to mention extensive allergy testing.
I stayed out of the shop for about ten days and was about all cleared up. I went back into the shop for a couple hours yesterday and created a little sawdust. I slept well except that I woke up with a brief coughing spell. Today, back into the shop for a while. We'll see.
My point here is that if lung congestion does not appear to be from infection, (when CS doesn't help) perhaps nebulizing with 3% food grade (Only!) H2O2 might be of help. I know of no adverse effects of using it, but could be corrected.
