My dentist says I don't have any Amalgam in my root canals because root canals that turned into apicoectomys are typically done with amalgam. Not regular root canals. I am trying to figure out whether he is right. He said that root canals are not and have not been filled with amalgam. No, absolutely not. He is the greatest dentist on earth. He is completely sinsere. Never pushy. He went over all my xrays looking at the root canals I had and said I definately never had apicoectomys.
As for the forum,I thought the contrary. Everyone on these forums says you have to take apart the root canals because they are all filled with amalagm as well. I thought this is going to be hopeless. I will never be free of amalagam, but maybe I actually will be! I only have one old gold crown, with unknown underneith. That's it! Once I get it replaced, I will be able to proceed with chelation.

I have not really gotten any confirmation. I thought they would just fill with amalagam again now that the root is replaced. why would they use another material, it's basically the same thing.-

IDK what posts you were reading but almost all endodontists, after they scrape out your pulp chamber and tubules, fill them in with gutta percha, which is not amalgam.
When they do an apicoectomy and they clean out the infected root tip, they're supposed to fill it in with a biocompatible material. Your dentist thinks silver-mercury amalgam is biocompatible?Dentists by law are required to keep records. You need to go back there, slap him in the face, grab him by the lapels and say, "LISTEN YOU MONSTER!!! WHAT F*CKING PROCEDURE DID YOU DO ON MY TOOTH?????"

I tend to agree with this statement, however going under the knife is ALWAYS SCARY and you never get used to surgical procedures.
The long-long wait (of up to 18 months -- which usually less but just in case there are complications -- is another thing you might want to consider very carefully.
Also consider implants are far more expensive than root canals.
All in all, perhaps the greatest advice is the following: Don't let anyone do any of your root canals.
FYI, there are many dentists who routinely mislead us. In reality, there is no such thing as "the nerve has died, so in order to save the tooth, we need to do a root canal."

Although the Mercury issue is important, as well as chelation I can tell you from experience that root canals with or without the mercury can cause you a host of medical problems.
I first became aware of this while reading a book provided by a holistic dentist in his waiting room waiting my turn to get my teeth cleaned. I had been having 4 or 5 Sinus infections a year that allopathic medicine treated with antibiotics, along with Fibromyalgia in my right shoulder, and arthritis in my right hip that was so bad I could walk more than 2 or three blocks. There were other medical problems, but I think they were brought on by the multiple antibiotic sessions given me 4 or 5 times a year.
Even after reading that my teeth might be the problem I didn't do anything about it for a few years because my teeth wern't bothering me. Finally I decided to get all the mercury removed as well as the root canals.
All my health problems were eliminated all most immediately except for the digestive havoc the antibiotics created. My advice, don't get any root canals, and remove any you have.
Anyway go to this sight and scroll down about half way until you find the Thomas E. Levy video re: root canals.

This is a reply to # 1,859,050root canals can be filled with a composite or Amalgam for the final filling.The inside of the tooth is typically filled with gutta percha but the final filling would be Amalgam or composite.So you should be able to tell by looking at your tooth.And i agree that root canals are extremely toxic and probably more of a threat to your health than amalgams.I recently just had 5 root canals removed.None of them were really bothering me.Couple of them were almost 20 yrs old.It was hard to do because it was 5 teeth and now i have to wear a partial.But the benefits to my health have been wonderful.It was like finding the missing puzzle piece in a myriad of health problems for me.I had my Amalgams removed 1 1/2 yrs ago and it made no difference in my health.Thats when i figured out that the root canals had to go.I had infection all thru my jawbones.Read the book The Tooth Truth by Dr. Frank Jerome.It is very informative on both mercury and root canals.Some people can handle a root canal or two...but i think if you are suffering from health problems with unknown causes the root canals need to come out and your body will thank you!!If you can not visibly see Amalgam in your root canals then you are probably fine.Advertisement

This is a reply to # 2,399,620It's also where the bacteria that we get from eating food resides specifically actinobacteria/actinomycetes. The dentist offices are a breading ground for this stuff and their sterilization methods will not kill it. They did endoscopy procedures on people with whipple's disease soaked the scope in chlorahexadine for 15-20 mins and the bacteria was still found on it. So you can only imagine how many dentist offices and how much hospital equipment is tainted with this stuff and their completely unaware of it. Makes you never want to eat out again in a restaurant.

This is a reply to # 1,858,687root canals can be filled with metal posts. After the dentist hollows out the canal and cleans it up, s/he takes an impression of the canal and sends it to a lab. The lab makes a post out of an alloy that must fit perfectly in the canal with only a film like clearance for cement or bonding material which is applied to secure the post in the tooth.
These posts should be made out of a biocompatible alloy such as gold but i've seen them made out of cheap crappy metal as well.
I have made probably thousands of these posts during a twenty year period when i was a dental lab technician.
And yes, problems can arise later but 90% of the time it's either dentist's fault or the lab's fault (or both). Same goes for crowns, if they are not done properly they will eventually fail.

This is a reply to # 1,859,118I've been out of dental technology for over 10 years now, but yes i've seen Amalgam used in root canals. Heck, i've even seen part of a tooth reconstructed from amalgam.
As far as metals used for posts, high content gold is considered the best but palladium and even mixture of gold & platinum come to mind as well.
All metals used in dental technology are alloys combined of more than one metal except for titanium which is used for implants. So when i say gold, i mean an alloy that has gold in it.
In the 90's, most dentists preferred palladium for their crowns and bridges and high content gold for post construction. Palladium costs less than gold and is as biocompatible, but it is more rigid than gold which may not be suitable for some applications.
All that said, there are many dentists who order everything in non-precious metal for cost effectiveness which can be as bad as amalgam. Non-precious metal almost always has nickel, beryllium, probably some copper and a few unknown crap but costs about 20-30 times less than a decent quality gold alloy.
Usually the lab includes a sticker with their lab work which details exactly what is in the alloy, so if you're concerned, you should ask your dentist for this sticker.

I need to keep it simple. I'm looking for amalagm right now, not to pull out and take apart all the root canals. I have enough dental work going on, with having to pay for a new root canal, over $1000 then the crown, over $1000. Next year when I can afford it, remove the last old crown with probable amalagm under it, I'd like to assume I've removed all amalagm before I can even think of a chelation process.- Re: ThinkAgain:

So are gold fillings 100% gold-i assume probably not . Are they usually mixed with some other type of metals? My grandma had gold fillings.
I have a few root canals and they seem to flare up every now and then-teeth are a pain in the #$#$$.

This is a reply to # 1,859,239Gibby, if your dentist says there are no Amalgams in your root canals, you either have to believe him or visit another dentist for a second opinion. Second checkup should not cost a lot but it will give you a peace of mind. If you decide to do it, just ask the 2nd dentist to check for any Amalgams in your dental work. You can always ask for x-rays from your dentist and take them with you to the 2nd one. By law s/he has to provide them to you. Make sure 1st & 2nd dentists don't know each other (when/where s/he graduated from?).
The problem for most people is to find a dentist who they trust, and seems like this is the case for you as well, and having worked with many dentists over the years, i don't blame you.
James, gold alloys used in dental work are never 100% gold. They can't be, because pure gold is soft and can easily be bent with your hand so they have to mix other metals to harden them enough. Usually they are mixed with platinum, palladium and silver but i am not a big fan of silver. Gold alloys used for full crowns are a little different than the ones used for porcelain crowns and bridges because they have to mix other stuff for bonding porcelain.

But I have to say, I've moved many many times, but actually have lived here it CT for 11 years now, and I've had the same dentist. I love him and trust him fully. He is a master at his work and unlike all my other dentists, he doesn't push me into anything. Most do. My husband has teeth of steel, and he is never ever been pushed to do anything either. He is very conservative, and told me that his practice hasn't used amalagam in over 11 years, maybe even more but at least since I've been there... He agreed, no one wants it in their mouth anymore. So, he's sympathetic and it sounds like he is used to hearing about people wanting to get it all out.
A note about my root canals. I've never had issues with them, as it seems many many people have had problems. I have enough on my plate now so I'm not going to worry about pulling root canals. I can acknoledge they could have potential bad problems, and with this last root canal, I asked the endodontist if she's filling with amalgam, and she said NOOO! She was quite honest about it and said that there is a contraversy about the safety of what they are filling them with.... I couldndt' get into it as I had my mouth wide open!! I have had a ton of dental work, (unfortunately I have bad teeth!) so between all the stuff I have to take care of (new crown now), big $$$$$$$$$ I will get the old one replaced next year.Advertisement

This is a reply to # 1,859,327Okay I believe an apicoectomy is when they fill the roots with mercury/amalgam. It is a kind of root canal or a deep filling.
I know someone who got VERY VERY VERY ill to the point of death and right on par with me when I was first sick, from this procedure. Gutta percha is a gummy like substance and the usual material used on a normal root canal in which they suck up the dead tooth pulp and stuff and fill it with the rubbery substance. The argument is that it will fill the tooth fine However, the tooth has tiny little cavities.

This is a reply to # 1,858,687gibby, you MAY have the greatest dentist in the whole wide world, but in my estimation there appears to be a lot of miscommunication between you and your dentist.
OTOH, it is true that IF in the unlikely event your root canal treatment turned into an apioectomy, then the latter would have been done with amalgam.
OTOH, typical root canals do not need apioectomies and Amalgam fillings.
IF 'I' was trying to figure out whether my dentist was telling the truth -- that is if my root canals were filled or not filled with Amalgam -- I would ask for and actually VIEW my own set of X-rays. By viewing X-rays it is EASY to tell if the patient has had any root canals with apioectomies.
I see no reason why you should question him/her too much. Simply ask for and actually VIEW your own set of X-rays. By viewing your X-rays it will be EASY to tell if you have had any root canals with apioectomies.
The lack of apioectomies mean there is no Amalgam in or about your root canals.Advertisement
