Usually, when we think about foods that increase diabetes risk, we think of white flour-based processed foods, sugary sodas, and desserts, since these foods are known to produce dangerous increases in blood glucose. Also, many diabetics are under the impression that that they should avoid carbohydrate-containing foods, and eat higher levels of protein to keep their blood glucose levels in check. However, dietary factors associated with diabetes are not a simple question of carbohydrate vs. protein. Whole food sources of carbohydrate, like fruit and whole grains, are protective.1 On the other hand, several studies have now confirmed that high intake of meat, which contains no carbohydrate, increases the risk of diabetes.
A meta-analysis of 12 prospective cohort studies has revealed that high total meat intake increased type 2 diabetes risk 17% above low intake, high red meat intake increased risk 21%, and high processed meat intake increased risk 41%.2
All the reasons behind these associations are not yet clear. One possibility is the pro-oxidant properties of heme iron (found only in animal products), the primary source of which is red meat. High dietary intake of heme iron and also high body stores of iron have been previously associated with increased diabetes risk in multiple studies3,4, whereas dietary nonheme iron (found only in plant foods) was protective. Heme iron from fish and poultry was also associated with diabetes risk.4 Oxidative stress, which may be brought on by excessive iron, plays an important role in the production of advanced glycation end products (AGEs), which contribute to both insulin resistance and diabetes complications.5 Also meat is a concentrated source of calories, it has a high caloric density and people can get a good blast of fat and protein, easily exceeding the body’s requirements for macronutrients. Meat eating is also associated with weight gain and of course, excess body weight is the most important risk factor for diabetes. Like most other chronic diseases that plague Americans, diabetes is a consequence of a high-calorie, low-nutrient diet-style that is deficient in protective unrefined plant foods.

I think you will find that the studies accurately portray the consumption of "cooked meat" as opposed to "raw meat".
The vast majority of people do not eat raw meat which has the benefits you have mentioned.
Personally, the idea of eating meat in its raw state is not that appealing and really quite repulsive, but each to their own.

Only when a people were ripped away from their native diets through the *modernization* of their lives, and exposure to processed foods did any of these cultures begin to express degenerative, chronic diseases.

who are *we*?
Do you think that an Inuit, or a Massai, who have eaten a very meat and fat intensive diet (up to 50% animal fats) and have done so for who knows how many hundreds or thousands of years would do well as a vegetarian?
No, they would not...
In less harsh environments, most ALL native peoples were hunter gatherers before agriculture - and ate primarily local in season foods... the same argument some use against the consumption of dairy, could be used for the consumption of grains as well.
The debate over a one size fits all way of eating is a bunch of crap, perhaps always has been (unless you believe in the Garden of Eden - but we have come very far from that). Yes, some people may benefit from a near vegetarian diet; even Gandhi tried to be 100% vegan on many occasions, some of those *experiments* with his followers as a study in order to provide proof. He couldn't do it, and after several tries, acquiesced, realizing that some raw dairy (think about his ancestry and gene pool here) was beneficial to health and well being... however, vegetarianism, or veganism, will, and has made others sick who are not genetically adapted to a fully vegan diet.
That is why, building one upon the other over the last 30 years or so we have found that, the Blood Type Diet showed benefit, then the metabolic typing diet showed us even greater benefit, and now diets tailored to an individual's specific genetic traits are being found to be so very beneficial for healing, health, and well being... and yes, what they are finding is that many genetic adaptations benefit greatly from animal fats, proteins and nutrition of some kind... as a primary animal food source, some may benefit more from fish and seafoods, some, red meats, others white meat, and still others raw dairy will prove to be their most beneficial genetically coded food.

Perhaps you could explain (in detail) why I am in the very best of health with abundant energy, an ideal BMI, and with no deficiencies on a mainly vegan/vegetarian diet of 30 years standing?
I am also not going to force my way of eating onto anyone, but your above comment smacks of dogma and prejudiced dogma at that.
Magnanimity would probably be a more appropriate way of posting.

People can eat a a vegan or almost entirely vegan diet and live quite healthily. Unlike you, most don't know what they are doing and believe that being a healthy vegan just means eliminating meat. Eating almost entirely raw vegan is particularly tricky, since our digestive systems are not set up to handle grains and many other forms of fruits and vegetables without some kind of preparation. Most often, such preparation involves heat or fermentation.
On the other hand, people COULD eat considerable raw meat and live healthily too. But most wouldn't because, once again, they would have no idea what they were doing. Eating only raw meat is in many instances even more tricky than eating only raw veggies and fruits, because, once again, our digestive systems are simply not set up to efficiently get nutrition from tearing off and wolfing down most common meats (with Sushi/seafood being a notable exception). If not cooked, meat must be somehow prepared and tenderized (such as curing. aging, marinating, pulverizing), in order for our digestive systems to properly extract all the nutrients.
Unlike what some would have us believe, we have NOT evolved as raw eaters of most forms of meat. Even the most conservative estimates tell us that man has been altering meat and other foods with heat (fire) for at least 200,000 years. Some estimates have us doing so as far back as 1.6 million years. I don't think evolution/adaption is so slow that our needs and habits should be the same as 200,000 years ago. I think we have had plenty of time to adapt to altering our foods with heat (cooking in other words) as modern man has been doing for eons now. I would also point out that our teeth are not the teeth of carnivores and are ill prepared for ripping and chewing raw meat.
Like you, I find the idea of eating most meat raw to be a repulsive chore - and, other than fish, not one I am inclined to perform. So pass me the sushi, perhaps a bit of wild/organic meat and some raw/steamed veggies and I will be just fine, thank you very much.

This is a reply to # 1,659,172How ridiculous. You have elevated raw meat to a fetish. Just because pre-agricultural people consumed meat does not mean this is natural or healthy, it just means that when people have inefficient ways of gathering food they are able to adapt to whatever environment they find themselves in - this in no way means that those adaptations reflect the human bodies ideal conditions.
Evolution builds us to survive in harsh conditions, but that doesn't mean that we thrive best in those conditions: we thrive best when we can cultivate optimal health.
For that, we need a vegan diet based around micronutrient rich vegetables. Vegans live much longer and have fewer health problems than meat eaters (and vegetarians).
Whether meat is cooked or raw, it is is still nutritionally inferior to high micronutrient plants - it still has cholesterol and saturated fat (as do unhealthy vegetarian diets).
As for raw vs cooked - this is a gross simplification. How you cook (fried vs steamed) makes a profound difference on the food, and theres nothing wrong with steaming vegetables.
Raw meat is also just plain disgusting. The physical revulsion we have at it (or at least those of us who don't have a blood lust raw meat fetish) may like many visceral reactions be an adaptive response to show that its not a good idea to eat. I do not believe that... my ancestors (even those living) routinely live into their 90's with several centenarians - eating animal products - raw dairy... they did dry, smoke, and cook their meats.
Grandma is 98... and counting.
Dad was diagnosed terminally ill at 52 (toxic occupational and hobby exposures)... he is still living at 75 and his BP was 118 - 76 Friday... a long while back we gradually got mom and dad to move away from processed foods, go organic when possible (farmers markets from local growers mostly), organic free range meats and eggs, wild caught fish, and I helped get him on raw goat milk and dairy over a year ago and that is the only real change he made in his diet that caused BP numbers to fall. Needless to say, he has left several medications behind and will likely live well into his 80's, and perhaps beyond.
About 1997, the last of those with his illness died (they were all in a Mayo study group)... making him the longest living survivor with this terminal illness... ever... by far.
In fact, one small family within ours... chose to go vegetarian and all passed in their 50's and 60's - most from heart attacks... The last two vegetarians in this family, were married, couldn't have children and they are no more, passing away in the late 1960's... illustrating that my personal experience with your statement has taught me different.
That said... *some* people given their ancestry may find better health and well being as vegetarians.
No need for either side, or the middle to get so riled up or defensive.
It is best for ALL of us to recognize that there is NO one size fits all way of eating for all people. The take home message with all of this should be a focus on the food quality first and foremost.
Focusing on food source and quality, my *meat* consumption has fallen easily to 1/5th of what it was before due to the increased nutritional values and food density.
I am sure raw meat eaters have probably experienced the same, perhaps even to a greater degree than I. I would like to hear if that is true.
There are common, rather well known, health problems with vegetarians\vegans - primarily with those that do NOT incorporate a wide enough range of foods in their diets, and\or try to be vegan\vegetarian when their biological (genetic) need indicates otherwise. This was, and is my point in how agribusiness has enabled this lifestyle... without food importation and *stores*, most of us on this planet would not be able to sustain this way of eating... unless we had 5 or more acres with good soil and weather conditions for 2 or more growing seasons a year... which would likely be a VERY small fraction of the people.
One man's food, is another man's poison... you may have heard that before... and it is true to the extent that a food that may be beneficial for one, may harm another.

While I agree that a diet that is largely vegetarian is usually a healthy one and one which leads to longer lifespans if carefully managed, I disagree completely that a completely vegetarian diet is the healthiest. Almost all of the longest lived peoples on earth consume at least some meat. In my opinion, there are far too many unhealthy vegans who don't carefully manage their diets. In many instances, it is they who have made an unnatural diet into a fetish.

No doubt that healthy fat intake plays a role; however, one must also take into consideration the differences in poverty, sanitation (including potable water) and access to primary healthcare. On the other side of the coin, one of the very longest lived groups of people in the world are the Seventh Day Advenists in California who consume an almost entirely vegan diet.
It would appear that regardless of the meat or vegetable content, a diet that takes advantage of what nature has to offer that has not been too corrupted by man and avoidance of junk foods and processed, additive filled foods is the ticket to better health and longer life. As for myself, you can bet that meat will remain a part of my diet.

Once again it comes down to food *quality* IMO.
quality of fats, quality of proteins, quality of carbohydrates, and quality of mineral content.
As an aside, the countries at the bottom of the list... have huge pollution issues in many industrial and farm production areas... some, quite a bit worse than ours...

I absolutely agree, Grz. Though 7th Day Adventists consume a diet that is by far predominately vegan, the vast majority of them are lacto-ovo vegans and thus consume some dairy and eggs. I have no doubts at all that the inclusion of lacto-ovo foods contributes to their overall health and longevity.
Seventh Day Adventist are also very health conscious people as a group and they exercise and live a much healthier lifestyle than most. What sometimes gets lost in the debate over meat eaters versus vegans is that vegans tend to be much more health-conscious as a group as opposed to all of those who get lumped into the "meat eater" category. The stats would surely look much different if you took out all the sedentary, junk food eaters, processed meat eaters and highly medicated people in the meat eater group and instead compared meat eaters who lived healthily to vegans who lived healthily.
With the exception of the Innuit, who had to adapt to the available food and cold, barren envirnment, all of the healthiest and longest lived peoples on earth eat a combination of plants and meats, as one would expect natural omnivores to do. The ratios of how much meat and how much vegetables is in their diets may vary, but what is constant is that they get the benefits that are available from both plants and meats, consume high quality, unadulterated and nutrient dense plants and meats, and live healthy lifestyles in locations where there is typically less toxins and pollution.
