Yes, your hormones are definitely out of whack. Unfortunately the removal of your gallbladder will prevent you you from using bitters, which is a great way to get the hormones in balance quickly.
You can use rice bran though, which provides both B vitamins and gamma oryzanol that both help to balance the hormones.
A diet high in vegetables will also provide phytoestrogens that help to balance the hormones.
You are on the right track with your supplements. On the magnesium though make sure it IS NOT magnesium oxide. This is a poorly absorbed form of magnesium to begin with. And it can burn the intestinal wall creating even more damage than the gallbladder removal will have already caused. The use of PPIs will further reduce the absorption of the magnesium if it is the oxide. Magnesium malate is the best choice followed by magnesium citrate.
The vitex (chaste tree berry) will also help, but be patient. It takes a few months to kick in.
Thanks for your advice - I see you are a regular contributor and many, many people heed your advice! the magnesium i was taking WAS the oxide version so I've quit that now - jeez, a minefield, isn't it!
There is always a lot to learn. By the way if you want to use up the rest of your magnesium oxide instead of throwing it out just take it with something acidic such as ascorbic acid or vinegar. This will help with the absorption and prevent it from burning the intestinal wall.
Do have some concerns regarding the vitex too - wondered if it may be the cause of my luteal phase suddenly lengthening?
Vitex is used to lengthen the luteal phase when it is too short. So this is likely the cause.
Have you ever come across this in forum experience?
No, I have not had anyone mention that before.
Not going to do anything drastic though - or go for a prescription med quick fix - It's only been 2 months after all!
Hormones do take time to balance. Often the system will over compensate. But gradually the body makes the corrections and the hormones balance.
Thanks for all your support - I needed to hear some reassurance. I can't believe how an imbalance can make you feel so awful - I forgot to mention that I do yoga, eat 75-80% organic products, plenty of raw food and i'm attempting to minimise my exposure to further disruptors by buying organic beauty and cleaning products. i do have another query though....my periods were going along nicely until this last one, which was DIRE! Not in terms of flow but everything PMSY seems heightened - the acne, the sobbing and the rage. To top it all off I ovulated at day 9 which means I'll probably have about 6 days respite when I may feel better. Someone suggested to me that the vitex may be causing my luteal phase to lengthen and encouraged me to switch out for Oil of Evening Primrose instead. Any thoughts??
The PMS symptoms you are talking about is from a surge in progesterone, which is an androgen. As I mentioned in my last post the body frequently overcompensates initially as it tries to balance its hormones. Cleansing the liver, B vitamins, building the flora and eating plenty of vegetables will all help get the hormones back in balance.
As far as evening primrose oil (EPO) goes I am not a big fan of it. One thing you have to watch for is that much of it is solvent (hexane) extracted. So if you do use it make sure that it was cold pressed and not hexane extracted. Even at that though EPO is unpredictable. Some women get great results from it, but with others it really aggravates their hormonal issues.
