i bought a botte of liqui-kelp cause I couldn't find Lugols anywhere and it says four drops aday which is 150mcg which hardly seems like anything to me. How many Mcg's should I take a day. I feel I'm Iodine deficent, no energy, low body temp, (96.2-96.6 degrees). any suggestions??

Potassium+iodine pills are fine if they're supplements within the normal RDI range (somewhere between 100% Daily Value and 50% of Upper Tolerable Intake, as recommended by your local version of the FDA or Ministry of Health). Aspartame will mimic and cause MS symptoms (et al) and sucralose has been PROVEN to destroy up to 40% of the thymus gland and we're to trust our FDA (who also hasn't banned bromides, a proven carcinogen) from U.S.A.'s shelves even though it's banned in Canada, Europe and Japan as carcinogenic - you mean THAT FDA???

has some very good information on what Iodoral has done for people. It has Iodine AND potassium Iodide in it and MD Guy Abraham, who is in his 80's now, and who headed the Iodine Research Project, now gives lectures for other doctors needing to learn more about this needed element. He also takes 100mg, yes, mg, of Iodoral a day - a tablet form of Lugol's iodine, which is a combo of Iodine and potassium iodide.
My husband had a really bad lung infection. Anyone else would have needed to enter the hospital as bad as he was getting. He took 1000mg, YES, Milligrams, (NOT micrograms-mcg), every day for two weeks, when nothing else worked.
He kept taking it because of all the phlegm he was getting out.
He now takes 100mg of SSKI (saturated solution of potassium iodide) every night at bedtime with a packet of emergen-C and a selenimethionine tablet (for the companion nutrients the doctors talk about) and continues to improve his health.

This is a reply to # 1,618,037You may check out the Iodine Supplementation forum, it usually has many people's experiences with the differing forms of iodine/iodide.
You'll hear/read about the various considerations for Iodine supplementation from source to dose. Some people claim that Kelp or natural sources of Iodine are the best, while others prefer to supplement with elemental forms such as Potassium Iodide (KI) or Nascent Iodine, just to name a few. The dosages also vary cause not everyone's body is the same and people's reactions differ. Some prefer that you get some type of test to check your iodine status. Usually, you will take a dose of iodine and a test will reveal how much you excrete. Depending on your excretion, it determines if you are iodine sufficient or not. The two channels I'm aware of are saliva and urine. I haven't done the tests due to the fact that I know I did not get adequate iodine from my diet.
Personally, I alternate between what I mentioned above... the KI and Nascent Iodine daily. One day I will take a drop of SSKI (saturated solution of potassium iodide), then alternate with the Nascent Iodine the next day on an empty stomach upon waking.
According to Trapper, the one that makes his own SSKI , one drop is roughly 30mg of iodide. According to my Nascent source, it is a 2% solution suspended in grain alcohol that roughly provides 400mcg of iodine in each drop. Some people take more, some take less, it depends on their interpretation of what is best for their own bodies. I feel that my own body likes my personalized dosing, even though I could technically take much more than that.
When I weigh the good vs bad of iodine/iodide supplementation, the good outweighs the bad, especially since the element plays a big role in our immune system, not just the thyroid.
Another equally important aspect of supplementation is the availability of co-nutrients to help absorption. Selenium is a big one, found in high amounts in Brazil Nuts. The natural forms of selenium found in the nut absorb the best comparatively to supplementation.
Researching this may take a long time, just make sure you take more than iodine/iodide to reap the benefits. Some people take extra salt to prevent reactions, but I take low doses comparatively and experience increased energy, feel slightly more hydraded, and improved memory. However, I did have some side-effects where I had a little more headaches than usual and too much energy at first.
Which brand do you have now? Liqui-Kelp from World Organics?
The labeling of the supplement is weird, it states KI, but then states iodine of 150mcg.
I wouldn't throw it away, just call the company and ask for a clarification if it's iodine or iodide.

1) 50-100% DV: average supplement (SAFE)
2) >100% DV, < Upper Tolerable: hypothyroidism treatment (MOSTLY SAFE, should not be taken unless hypothyroid, should not be the first Iodine supplement you start with - test for effects at above-standard levels first)
3) >Upper Tolerable (toxic levels): pre-radiation exposure military issue, saturates thyroid with iodine, so that the body, which does not differentiate between regular and radioactive Iodine isotopes, is left unable to absorb any more Iodine for the next day or so, and thus doesn't absorb the radioactive stuff. (VERY DANGEROUS AND UNHEALTHY)

This is a reply to # 1,618,585Yes, Lugols has potassium Iodide and iodine. It is safe to take internally. I've been taking either iodoral or Lugols for the last 2 years or so-- I'm still here and the only side effects is that I've been detoxing-- throwing off bromides, but that's a good thing. If you go reading the links I, harmonic, hucha, healing waters and manik provided, you'll find that the body needs both Iodine and iodide. You'll also find that we are all probably iodine/iodide deficient due to Iodine generally lacking in our diet and all the bromide, and fluoride in our environment. When we are iodine/iodide deficient the halides bromide and fluoride take up residence in our Iodine receptors (the body taking those if iodine is missing) resulting in many, many health problems including: goiters, hypothyroidism, hashimotos, breast cancer, fibroid cystic breasts, uterine fibroids, polycystic ovarian syndrome just to name a few.
So, bottom line, if you would like to start slow you can take the liquid kelp supplement but you will notice faster improvement if you move on up to lugols, iodoral, magnascent or trappers SSKI (iodine supplementation forum).
The reason that larger iodine supplementation amounts are considered to be "toxic" by folks who are mis-informed is the detoxing effect listed in my earlier post. When bromide is leaving the body, a lot of negative symptoms -- detoxing are felt. I personally have had most of the symptoms listed. But, I either took breaks from taking iodine or increased my salt wanter intake and the symptoms went away as the bromide was flushed out. Taking some liver supporting supplements like milk thistle and n-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) can go a long way in helping reduce the detox symptoms.
Iodine is good for you...please don't be scared away by the negative post here. In fact, leave this forum and go over to the iodine supplementation forum, you'll find lots of support and lots of posting of the positive effects of iodine supplementation as well as postings of detox reactions so you won't be sidelined when something strange pops up 'cause someone else is bound to have experienced it too and posted about it.

This is a reply to # 1,618,637I've never tried it. It's really pricey. I get 2oz of JCrow's 2% Lugols at swansonvitamin.com for $12+s&h. I get some of my supplements there. I'm taking about 175mg of Lugols right now, I put it in gel caps cause it's a little too much Iodine for me to knock back in water and it's easier for me to take. I was doing the iodoral, but with my tummy issues, I didn't seem to be absorbing it. I figured the liquid would be better. I still get the iodoral and I give 4 tablets every day (more or less) to my 12yr old daughter to help with her cramps and 1 for my dog. The hubs is supposed to take it but won't unless I remind him, SIGH. I also put a drop or 2 of the Lugols in the pets' water dishes.
As you can see, I'm not afraid of iodine. LOVE the stuff!!!

Your body takes what it needs, and you excrete the remaining excess. This was told to me directly by the TPCS-Iosol producers. Opinions, please? Thanks. Lisa
