Pristiq is a selective serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. Both of these neurotransmitters can be increased with supplements. For serotonin I recommend 5-HTP and the amino acid tyrosine for norepinephrine. I recommend 50mg 5-HTP and 500mg tyrosine 3 times daily at least 30 minutes before meals. I also recommend giving this 1 to 2 weeks to build up before trying to wean off the Pristiq. In addition trimethylglycine (TMG) is a methyl donor that helps to build up neurotransmitters. I recommend 1,000mg 3 times daily of TMG with meals. Once off the Pristiq you should be able to wean off the 5-HTP and I recommend reducing the tyrosine slowly to once daily. The tyrosine is good to stay with since it helps to support the thyroid as well and raises dopamine, which also helps with mood.
I also recommend adding nettle leaf to your regime. Nettle leaf helps to reduce lactate, which is the most common trigger for panic attacks. Nettle leaf also helps to support the adrenals, which will reduce over release of epinephrine, another common cause of panic attacks. You will also find that nettle leaf is very nutritious and supports the liver, kidneys, thyroid, intestines, and connective tissue. It is a very safe herb and makes a great iced tea if steeped over night with a little lemon grass and stevia. Because nettle is high in magnesium and chromium, and supports the adrenals it can also help with the muscle jerking and the hypoglycemia.
These should stop the panic attacks. If not then I also recommend adding the amino acid glycine or gamma amino butyric acid (GABA), 500-1,000mg 3 times daily at least 30 minutes before meals.
Would you mind explaining why the anxiety is happening. What is going on in your brain for this to happen? I was originally put on meds for depression not anxiety....Now it seems to be an anxiety issue? This may change once I get the anxiety under control.
I found you a link to explain it in more detail, but it is not fully understood:
http://www.brainexplorer.org/anxiety/Anxiety_Aetiology.shtml
Also, you had mentioned weaning off of 5htp. Are their any negative long term effects in using this? I am hoping to wean off all that I can and hope that my body does what it need.
There are no long term risks of low doses. The concern is really more with high dose use elevating blood serotonin higher than normal. This is what happened with Phen fen, which ended up causing heart valve damage in a number of people.
Which aminos are so to speak adaptogenic? Meaning help to restore your body, does not put a band aid on it and has a long term negative effect and is habit forming?
Tyrosine is used to build the adrenals neurotransmitters. Technically phenylalanine as well, but phenylalanine breaks down in to tyrosine before forming the neurotransmitters. And phenylalanine can be a problem for people with PKU and can raise blood pressure in some individuals so I prefer tyrosine.
What do you recommend for getting your brain balanced out and back to normal functioning without whatever it was lacking to cause the depression and anxiety in the first place?
Depression has numerous causes so there is no simple answer there. Narrowing down possible causes would help. As for anxiety lowering lactate levels and raising acetylcholine can help. I like nettle leaf for lowering lactate and lecithin granules or choline bitartrate to raise acetylcholine.
