The best way to build up the adrenals is with natural vitamin C, pantothenic acid, and adaptogenic herbs.
For vitamin C I like papaya, watercress, berries, and kiwis for food sources. Herbal sources include amla, acerola cherry, rosehips, and nettle leaf.
For pantothenic acid the best source is bee pollen. Nutritional yeast, rice bran, oat bran, nettle leaf and seaweeds are also good choices.
Some of the best adaptogenic herbs include schisandra berry, Chinese licorice root, astragalus, Siberian ginseng, jiaogulan, and ashwagandha. Nettle leaf and amla berry are also excellent for the adrenals.
Try to avoid stress as much as possible. Also stay away from pharmaceutical steroids and all stimulants like caffeine and nicotine. Keep in mind that caffeine can be found in many hidden sources including aspirin, kola nut (bissy nut) and guarana (extremely high). I also recommend avoiding adrenal glandulars as these can atrophy the adrenals with long term use.
Most people using the adaptogens, vitamin C and pantothenic acid generally report improvement in as little as 3 days.
If my adrenals are stressed do you think I should absolutely stay away from chocolate? I know it has a little bit of caffeine in it but it seems like it does me some good to eat small amounts of high quality dark chocolate
A small amount of dark chocolate occasionally is not going to be a problem.
I do very well on all of the herbs that you mentioned except ginseng. It tends to make me very hyper and a little bit wired. Even the Siberian ginseng which is less intense than the other types.
That is odd that you would react to Siberian ginseng that way. Siberian ginseng is not even a true ginseng. It is only referred to as a ginseng due to its adaptogenic properties. Just like suma ("Brazilian ginseng") and ashwagandha ("Indian ginseng"). And most of the ginseng we get in the health food stores is garbage. The high quality roots are about $600 a pound so the Chinese keep these. What they export for encapsulation is the root bark and rootlets that would otherwise get thrown away. This is another reason I prefer jiaogulan, which is 7 times higher in sterols than Panax ginseng giving you more strength at a much lower cost.
actually ashwaganda does the same thing, it makes me feel wired. So I avoided for that reason. I have never done suma however so I don't know about that
The only reason I can think of that you would have a stimulatory effect would be an allergic reaction to the herb. This would cause a release of epinephrine in an attempt to counter the allergic response and would cause the stimulation. Otherwise the ashwagandha should be relaxing since it stimulates the GABA receptors in the brain, which has a calming effect.
HVER, Do you use a partcular type of jiaogulan? Thanks.
I use both the teabags to make sun tea (8 teabags to 1 gallon of water) or the powder, which I use in formulations. I get the teabags in Chinatown where they are sold under the name Gynostemma.
helps with dr schulze info

Most of these ingredients are not even in his adrenal formula. From the Christopher site:
http://www.drchristophers.com/capsules/adrenal-formula.html
Ingredients: Mullein Leaf, Licorice Root, Eleuthero Root (Siberian Ginseng), Gotu Kola, Hawthorn Berries, Lobelia Herb, Ginger Root & Cayenne Pepper.
By the way combining lobelia with ginger IS NOT recommended. Lobelia can be toxic but the body will normally vomit if to much is taken. But ginger suppresses the vomit centers in the brain preventing the body from throwing up an excess of lobelia, which can lead to respiratory failure. There is probably not a lot of lobelia in this product, but if people take something else with lobelia this could be quite dangerous. Especially if the person has a chronic respiratory issue such as COPD since many of these herbs are used for some respiratory issues.
what are your recommendations as far as cleansing and rebuilding the adrenals go?
Nourishing the adrenals with natural vitamin C and pantothenic acid (B5) sources, adaptogens and avoiding stimulants, steroids and keeping stress to a minimum:
