Hi Di,
Your question: possible advantages/disadvantages of each, and what circumstances might be appropriate to use each?
Years ago, a friend of mine used to make her own yogurt. Would yogurt be better if homemade??
Also, does buttermilk culture have to have the added salt?
Can one make it without salt if one is trying to reduce sodium in comparison to potassium and other alkaline minerals?

Answer: Anytime one can make their own without the Commercial additives, one may be better off!
One does not have to add salt to make cultured buttermilk, but most folks who are having problems may also have Adrenal problems?
The Adrenals need a certain amount of Natural Sodium!
Adding salt to homemade cultured buttermilk may convert the salt into a more Natural Sodium source, which in turn may help our Adrenals!
For then one may reduce their intake of Salt as would be added to other foods to help control water retention!
As usual not everything may be as it may 1st seem to be!
