I read a quote today that impressed me deeply. It was a wonderful way to begin a morning, a fantastic way to begin a new day of life.

Turkey's founding father Kemal Ataturk was quoted, " So what does it matter that if our regime does not resemble democracy, does not resemble socialism,does not resemble anything? Gentleman, you should be proud of not resembling anything; because we resemble ourselves!" "We resemble ourselves" in turkish is "biz bize benzereiz" indicates a belief in one's dintinct, and therefore special, identity. It has been said that a Turk's first duty is to be proud.

After reading the quote, it dawned on me what was the feeling I have not been able to put my finger on the last few days. Proud. Not arrogant, or haughty or overweening, but a sense of peaceful pride and a sense of empowerment by being just me, the unique me that I am. I do not subscribe to any sect, community, religion or the like but being able to respect all of that yet blend the beauty of each and create my own belief system and way of life. I feel that any ideologically-driven group will definitely endow a sense of belonging but, to varying degrees, inevitably curtail one's freedom of expression and thought.

I am fasting along and it is not incredibly easy but it is coming along. I think tomorrow calls for a visit to the library to invest in a guide to changing my life. FOr today, let the feeling of being proud of being the unique me sink into my bones and permeate my soul. I think this is an amazing notion and a brilliant way to kickstart a transformation of the road/life ahead.
