Here's a brief run down on my bowel study project.

Study topic: The effectiveness of probiotics (lactoforte) in use of treating irritable bowel syndrome.

Professor-mentors: Prof Gwee(primary), Dr Yap, Dr Chia, Dr Siew

Clinic attached: Shenton medical Group (8.30am-5.30pm opening hours 1-2 pm closed)

Demands: monday-friday in summer, morning session (9am-1pm), project lasts up till next year

Components: Bowel studies--antibiotics (control) and antibiotics + lactoforte
...........Constipation studies--protexin(Grp 1) and protexin + psyllium sache(Grp 2)

Aspects:
1st part: interview patients
----------Bowel diary
.............a)Did Dr say about bowel study?
.............b)Did Dr mention about bowel diary--show how to record, go through subject information (1. what the study is about 2. diary is voluntary, patient may have to repeat questionaaire and bowel dairy 1/4 year- 1 year later)
----------Sign consent
----------Questionnaire (~18-25 questions, ticks by me and mark with X by patient)
2nd part: Collect bowel diary two weeks later
----------a)Did you complete the prescribed medication?
----------b)Did you have any difficulties completing the bowel diary?
----------c)Are you more aware or better understand your bowel pattern?
----------d)Advice participation 3/6/9/mths later
----------Notebook record (Subject no , initial( ie ITLM), age, gender)
----------Check bowel diary ( coherency in recordings and completion of 2 week record)
----------Present $20 reimbursement
3rd part: Tabulation of results
???

Target patients: 200 by June (currently:70)

First meeting with Nurse assistant Summer: Friday May 4, 9am
